Blake Griffin signs with Nets after clearing waivers

Blake Griffin cleared waivers and officially signed with the Brooklyn Nets, the team announced Monday.

The 31-year-old power forward reached a buyout with the Detroit Pistons last week. The rebuilding Pistons reportedly attempted to trade Griffin prior to the agreement, but a contract that owed him $39 million next season proved prohibitive.

A six-time All-Star, Griffin will likely take on a bench role in Brooklyn for the first time in his career behind a loaded starting lineup featuring Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden. Griffin has started each of the 642 games he's played in the NBA since arriving to the Los Angeles Clippers as the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.

Once one of the league's most athletic players, the formerly high-flying Griffin hasn't dunked in an NBA game since 2019. He's revamped his game as a jump shooter after multiple surgeries on his left knee limited his ability to attack the rim. After averaging fewer than two 3-point attempts per game during his first seven NBA seasons, Griffin has averaged at least 5.6 attempts from behind the arc since 2017-18.

Griffin has played just 38 games since the 2018-19 season. In 20 games this season, he's averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 36.5% from the floor and 31.5% from 3-point distance.

He'll add scoring punch off the bench to a Nets roster that traded much of its depth in the deal to acquire Harden. He won't address the Nets' most glaring needs, which remain defense and post play.
