Former Nuggets, Trail Blazers center Wayne Cooper dies at 65

Longtime Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers center Wayne Cooper died on Monday, the Nuggets announced.

He was 65.

The circumstances around Cooper's death are unknown.

Cooper spent 14 seasons in the NBA, starting in 1978 after he was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the draft. He then had a few short stints with the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks and Trail Blazers before joining the Nuggets in 1984. While in Denver, Cooper averaged 9.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while helping the Nuggets reach at least the Western Conference semifinals three separate times.

He retired in 1992 after three final seasons with the Trail Blazers. In total, Cooper averaged 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds in 984 games throughout his career.

After his playing career, Cooper spent time as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings before moving into their front office and serving as their vice president of basketball operations for nearly two decades.
