Karsten Warholm of Norway didn’t just capture a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics, he made history.

Warholm fended off Team USA’s Rai Benjamin on the final turn to claim the top spot on the podium. Benjamin made a great run at the end, but Warholm finished with a record time of 45.94.

What made this record-breaking performance from Warholm so iconic was the fact that he broke his old record by 0.76 seconds. At this point, he’s just competing in a league of his own.

As soon as Warholm crossed the finish line, he ripped his shirt in celebration. It was an amazing moment for the 25-year-old star.

The sports world was in awe of Warholm’s performance on Tuesday, and rightfully so.

People, I don’t think you realize what you just watched,” Shannon Sharpe of FS1’s Undisputed tweeted. “A man just ran Sub 46 in the 400M Hurdles. That’s Beamon’s jump in Mexico City, Bolt’s sub 9.6 in 100 meters. I saw Kevin Young run 46.78 in Barcelona, still can’t believe Warholm ran that fast. Geeeeezzz.”

NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III also shared his thoughts on Warholm’s historic performance. Griffin was a member of Baylor’s track and field team and broke the NCAA Midwest Regional 400-meter hurdles record during his collegiate career.

“Wow,” Griffin said. “45.94 in the 400m hurdles is crazy! A lot of people can’t even run that in the 400m.”

Griffin brought up an excellent point about Warholm’s time being great for a 400-meter race without hurdles.

“48 people ran in the regular 400m prelims yesterday,” Bryan Fischer of Athlon Sports said. “The highest semifinal qualifying time was 45.64. Karsten Warholm ran 400m in 45.94 — while jumping over hurdles — which was better than 23 Olympic sprinters did without the hurdles.”

This was the first Olympic medal of Warholm’s career.

We’ll see if Warholm can continue to add more gold to his trophy case over the next few years.
