Sports bar posts Anne Frank meme with ‘hotter than an oven’ joke

A Rhode Island sports bar finds itself at a loss after posting an indefensible meme mocking Holocaust victim Anne Frank.

Atlantic Sports Bar and Restaurant reportedly issued an apology after sharing an image of Frank on its Facebook page Friday, along with the caption “It’s hotter than an oven out there and I should know.”

That posting came amid an East Coast heat wave.

The sports bar’s message was pulled down over the weekend, according to the New Port Daily News, which reported on that deleted meme and published a requisite apology from the eatery on Monday.

“The post was poorly thought out and we realize that it was incredibly inappropriate and does not reflect our values as members of our community,” that statement reads.

The eatery acknowledged there’s nothing that can be said to undo the offensive posting, but claimed it is a “tolerant, inclusive” establishment that meant no offense.

“We appreciate the outpouring of support, as well as the outpouring of rightful criticism,” management continued. “This will certainly be a teachable moment for our team.”

Frank, who famously evaded Nazi capture at the start of World War II, was taken prisoner in 1944 and died in a concentration camp less than a year later. While the Nazis did use ovens to incinerate the bodies of some of the roughly 6 million Jews killed in work camps, Frank, along with her sister Margot, died from complications related to the infectious disease typhus.

Atlantic Sports Bar and Restaurant is apparently as bad as marketing as it is with history.

According to the Anne Frank Museum, Frank died under conditions described as “cold” and “wet” marked also by “a lack of food.”

She was 16 years old.

The Tiverton, R.I., establishment’s, Facebook page was unavailable to the public Tuesday, though people offended by its mockery of a Holocaust victim freely expressed their displeasure on the review site Yelp.com.

“You should be ashamed of yourself and I hope your business crashes and burns — that is at minimum,” wrote one commenter.

Several critics posted similar sentiments.

“Nazi jokes about killing Jews is not a good look for any business,” another commenter stated. “I hope this causes the business to close.”

Yelp put a “public notice” warning on the restaurant’s page reading “This business recently received increased public attention resulting in an influx of people posting their views to this page, so we have temporarily disabled the ability to post here as we work to investigate the content.”
