Southwest Ohio high school bowlers roll toward 2024 state tournament. Here's what we know

The bowling postseason in the Ohio High School Athletic Association is getting into gear.

Division I teams in Southwest Ohio will compete in the district tournaments this weekend at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek. The girls bowl Thursday and the boys compete Friday.

The Division II state tournament is this weekend at HP Lanes in Columbus. The boys tourney is Friday and the girls on Saturday. The DI bowling state tourneys are March 8-9 in Columbus.

Here’s a look at the bowlers and teams still in contention.

Division II

Clinton-Massie qualified for the boys state tournament for the second straight year. The Falcons are the only local competitors in the boys field.

CM finished second in the district tournament with 4,097 to first-place Kenton Ridge (4,255). The Falcons only lost one senior from last year’s team so the rest of their top contributors have state experience.

Junior Wyatt Smith led the Falcons at districts with a 630 individually and junior Sam Massie shot 606. Brandon Moritz was the Southern Buckeye-American player of the year with a 220 average for the season, with a high game of 289 and a high series of 523. Mason Keck finished second in the state last year with a 677 series and is back for more this weekend.

Georgetown sophomore Carolyn Edmisten qualified for the DII girls state tournament after finishing sixth in the district tourney with a 573. She is the only local competitor in the state field.

Edmisten led Georgetown to a share of the SBAAC-National title and was the division player of the year after averaging 192.8. She had the league’s high game of the season with 267 and second-high series (472).

Division I boys

In the district tournament, only four teams out of 24 entrants advance to next weekend’s state tournament.

The top four individuals not on a qualifying team also advance.

The 14 Cincinnati teams competing in Friday’s district tournament are Anderson, Batavia, Elder, Fairfield, Goshen, Harrison, Hillsboro, La Salle, Lebanon, Loveland, Mason, Middletown, Oak Hills and St. Xavier.

Oak Hills won the Rollhouse sectional with a 4,135, and Mason shot 4,035. Elder won the Crossgate sectional with 4,053 and Lebanon shot 4,002.

Hamilton senior Aiden Hoyte won the Rollhouse sectional title with a 695 series. La Salle’s Jace Amann was second with 654.

Team champ Oak Hills had Brady Sabin tied for second (654), junior Tanner Iles fourth (653) and senior Casey Lecount eighth (624).

Mason lost in the quarterfinals of last year’s state team tournament and will look to make a return trip after graduating all of their main starters. Hillsboro also advanced to the state tournament. La Salle’s Tyler Richmond competed at state as an individual and will attempt to help the Lancers get there as a team this weekend.

Fairfield finished fifth in the district tournament last year, just 96 pins away from going to state. Lebanon was seventh.

West Clermont’s Will Shepard won the Crossgate sectional with 692. The rest of the top five were Graham Copley (Anderson), Eli Foertsch (Milford), Elijah MacKenzie (Turpin) and Elder’s Noah Schott. Seniors Steven Kramer and Gionni Williams led second-place Lebanon in sixth and seventh place individually.

The individual district qualifiers: Javier Echeverria Aliccea (Winton Woods), Vincent Edwards (Northwest), Eli Foertsch (Milford), Kaden Hite (Mt. Healthy), Colby Hosier (Lakota West), Aiden Hoyte (Hamilton), Derrick Klinker (New Richmond), Trey Lambert (Monroe), Ryan Lemley (Milford), Michael Marts (Edgewood), Elijah Mackenzie (Turpin), Rayshawn Moore (Colerain), Will Shepard (West Clermont), Preston Sholler (Wilmington).

Girls Division I

Fourteen teams advanced to Thursday’s district tournament: Anderson, Batavia, Fairfield, Harrison, Hillsboro, Lakota West, Mercy McAuley, Oak Hills, Ross, St. Ursula, Seton, West Clermont, Western Brown and Wilmington.

Wilmington won the Rollhouse sectional with a 3,535, the highest score of the 14 local district qualifiers by far. West Clermont was next with 3,264 and Batavia 3,208.

Mercy McAuley won the Crossgate sectional with 3,290 followed by Seton with 3,178.

Wilmington junior Kylie Fisher won the Rollhouse sectional with a 599, the highest score in both sectionals. Senior Courtney Carmack led West Clermont in second place with 584, tied with Walnut Hills junior Nevaeh Williams.

Seton’s Sami Hasselbeck won the Crossgate sectional with 568, followed by Hillsboro senior Bell Perkins (552), Western Brown junior Lily Holder (540), and St. Ursula senior Payton Beard (513). Mercy McAuley senior Jadyn Carle finished fifth (509) and sophomore teammate Julianna Duke (484) was sixth as part of the team champion Wolves.

The 14 individual qualifiers to the district tourney are Katlyn Boggs (Middletown), Kaylee Braun (Mount Notre Dame), Lilly Daniels (Lebanon), Kate Getz (Hamilton), Brylie Gold (Milford), Haley Goodman (Northwest), Lauren Haas (Ursuline), Cali Meshew (Milford), Ellie Miller (Taylor), A.J. Paszczykowski (Turpin), Khushi Patel (Princeton), Sophia Roberts (Princeton), Hannah Weigle (Little Miami) and Nevaeh Williams (Walnut Hills).

League champions

Here are all the league champions for the 2023-24 season, with top all-league honors if available.

Eastern Cincinnati Conference boys: Lebanon (16-2) and West Clermont (11-4) tied for first at 8-1. Top averages: Steven Kramer (Lebanon) 218.3, Elijah MacKenzie (Turpin) 213.6, Will Shepard (WC) 209.7, Graham Copley (Anderson) 209.5.

Eastern Cincinnati Conference girls: Milford (16-2), Lebanon (15-2) and West Clermont (12-3) tied for first at 8-1. Top averages: Nevaeh Williams (Walnut Hills) 200.6, Hannah Weigle (Little Miami) 170.1, Taylor Hooks (WC) 167.4.

Girls Greater Catholic League: Mercy McAuley (8-0, 14-2). Player of the Year: Sami Hasselbeck (Seton); Coach of the Year: Amy Feie (Mercy McAuley); Top averages: Payton Beard (SUA) 181.5, Hasselbeck 173, Kendall Cook (MM) 172.8.

Greater Catholic League-Coed boys: Carroll (8-2, 14-4). Hayden Shelly (McNicholas) top local average in seventh (187.3).

Greater Catholic League-Coed girls: McNicholas (4-2, 10-7). Top local averages: Katie Singleton (Badin) 145.5, Tori Singleton (Badin) 141.
