SouthCoast in Action: Whaling City kicks off 2024 season

Here's a look at the opening week of action for Whaling City Youth Baseball.

Sunday, April 28

Apex Electrical 13, Wonder Bowl 0: The defending Champions started the 2024 season in much the same way they finished the last season, with another win. Ethan Dube and Dakota Gamage were on top of their game on the mound as the pair combined to toss a one hitter and strike out eight Wonder Bowl hitters. Ruben Vazquez and Gamage had two hits and knocked in two runs each as well. Jared Nunes and Isaiah Figueroa knocked in two runs as well, and Landyn Jerome checked in with his first career hit for the Electric Company. Zhakiye Guidry had the lone hit for Wonder Bowl, a fourth inning base hit. The Electric Company sent the message on Opening Day that they are ready to make another strong run at a playoff spot.

South Coast Towing 9, T. S. Sports 1: Jose Martinez was the winning pitcher for South Coast, he struck out eight and allowed just one hit over his three innings of work on the mound. Martinez also had a fine game at the plate; he ripped a solo home run in his first at bat of the season to stake his team to an early 1-0 lead. He would go 3-3, score four runs and drive in two runs. Martinez was also helped by teammates Camdyn Messier and Reese Butler who had two hits apiece and combined to knock in five runs. Yaniel Fernandes pitched well for T.S. Sports, allowing just one run during his time on the hill. Wesley Rodrigues and Isaac Couto checked in with a hit each for T.S. Sports.

Kitchens & Baths 16, LeBeau’s 2: James Reardon and Jameson Silva were a pair to be reckoned with on Opening Day for the K&B crew. The two righthanded pitchers would combine to limit LeBeau’s to three hits while striking out seven. Reardon, who started on the hill was credited with the win. Corey Bonds had three hits; A.J. Gracie had a fine game rapping out two hits in three at bats while driving in four runs. Jameson Silva started his season off offensively with a 4-4 performance, while his teammate Nolan Sousa chipped in with a pair of hits knocking in three runs. Owen Viera, Mason Graveson, and Landon Madeira had a hit each for LeBeau’s.

Amaral’s Linguica 9, Table 8 Restaurant 3: Ben Bernardo was the winning pitcher for Amaral’s, Bernardo was tough on the hill going five solid innings, scattering two hits while striking out ten Table 8 hitters, before handing the ball to Blake Hallett who came on to close the game. Jack Fleurent had a fine game for Amaral’s with three hits, Bernardo helped his own cause with two hits and two RBI’s. Ben Church had a game to remember as he checked in with his first career hit. Jeremiah Balley, and Issac DaSilva tallied hits for Table 8.

Tremblay Bus 9, Dave’s 0: Isaac Teixeira was the winning pitcher for the Bus Company on Opening Day, he went the first four innings on the hill, striking out six Dave’s hitters and did not allow a hit. Teixeira also scored twice and had a hit. Syncere Lugo had two hits, Tucker Wilcox scored twice, and Owen Baptista had a pair of doubles to pace the Bus Company to their first win of the season. Sean Pimental had the lone hit for Dave’s, a sixth inning base hit. Palace Pizza 13, New Bedford Fire 0: The Pizza Crew came out of the gates strong on Opening Day scoring thirteen runs that were powered by the bats of Liam Cubero, Sylas Jorge, and Nyrell Gonzalez. Cubero, Aiden Girouard, and Sylas Jorge combined on the mound to toss a no hitter for Palace. Girouard struck out six, Cubero struck out three as did Jorge. An excellent team win for manager Josh Pires Pizza Crew.

Monday, April 29

DeBross Oil 10, Palace Pizza 2: Parker Pacheco was in mid-season form for DeBross, he was in a word, dominant. He struck out 11 Palace hitters and surrendered one hit before handing the ball to Max Mutnansky in the sixth inning with one out. Mutnansky came on and quickly induced a game-ending double play. Liam Cubero pitched well for Palace Pizza, giving up five runs over his three innings of work, he also tallied his team’s only hit, a fourth inning double. The Oilers bats were warming up as Parker Pacheco helped his own cause going 3-3, his brother Logan went 2-3, Austin Rodrigues had two hits and two RBIs, and Max Mutnansky scored three times. Mikey Galarza also had a base hit for the Oilers.

Tremblay Bus 10, A. C. G. 2: Tucker Wilcox and Nate Martinez combined to toss a no-hitter. Wilcox went 5⅔ innings, striking out 11 A.C.G. hitters. Santos Alvarez had an outstanding game for the Bus Company, he ripped a pair of triples and a double. Wilcox, Syncere Lugo, Owen Baptista, and Isaac Teixeira all chipped in with hits as well.

Tuesday, April 30

South Coast Towing 14, Table 8 Restaurant 2: Camdyn Messier took the hill for his first career starting pitching assignment, before he would hand the ball to teammate Reese Butler, who came on in relief, the young righthander would strike out eight Table 8 Restaurant hitters, around three walks, while not giving up a hit. His teammate Butler would throw the last inning in relief and did not surrender a hit. The pair of right-handed hurlers would lead the Tow Company to their second win of the young season. The South Coast bats were led by Jose Martinez who rapped out two hits, Messier also had two hits and drove in two runs in support of his own cause. Brayden Douglass scored four runs and drove in a run hitting out of the leadoff spot for the Tow Company, while Brayden Oliver was a wall behind the plate defensively , and ripped and RBI triple.

Amaral’s Linguica 1, T.S. Sports 0: In a game that can only be described as an old school pitcher’s duel, Amaral’s would earn their second win on the season in dramatic walk-off fashion. Both teams’ pitchers were locked in throughout this match up. T. S. Sports starting pitcher Yaniel Fernandes went the first two innings, striking out four Amaral’s hitter and did not allow a hit before giving way to Wesley Rodrigues. Rodrigues came on in relief and would strike out six of Amaral’s hitters while scattering two hits and not allowing a run. Carter Correia came on in relief of Rodrigues and pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth inning, that would bring the game into the sixth inning still locked in a scoreless tie. Amaral’s pitching was equally impressive as the duo of starting pitcher Jayce Cabral would hurl the first four innings and not allow a hit while striking out eight T.S. Sports hitters before giving way to righthanded reliever Jack Fleurent. Fleurent would toss the final two innings of the game, he struck out two, and did not allow a hit. The game was won in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jayce Cabral would lead off with a double and eventually score the walk off win by way of a hard-hit ball by Blake Hallett that was bobbled in the infield to allow Amaral’s to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Wednesday, May 1

Kitchens & Baths 3, Apex Electrical 0: Pitching was the word of the day in this game between two good teams with high expectations for this season. The defending Champion Electric Company trotted out Dakota Gamage to start the game, and he responded with a fine outing striking out eight, scattering just two hits allowing two runs before giving way to Isiaha Figueroa and Ethan Dube. Apex pitching combined to allow the Kitchen Crew to just three hits in the game. However, Corey Bonds of Kitchens & Baths was equal to the task, Bond went the distance on the mound for Manager Nate Silva in a shutout victory. Bond would allow just two Apex hits and strike out twelve Apex hitters along the way. The eventual game winning run was scored by Nolan Sousa in the second inning when he led off with a ringing double, he would advance on a stolen base, and a fielder’s choice, eventually scoring on a passed ball. Dakota Gamage and Jared Nunes each had a hit for Apex.

LeBeau’s 10, Wonder Bowl 4: Mason Graveson pitched 4⅔ innings for LeBeau’s, he would strike out eleven while scattering six Wonder Bowl hits and allowing just one run. Tatum Barboza ripped a two-run double, Graveson scored three times, Owen Viera and Landon Madeira continued to swing hot bats with each leading their team with a multi-hit performance. Tanner Cabral and Leo Kelly each checked in for Wonder Bowl with two hit each. Cabral also had a fine outing on the hill for Wonder Bowl pitching 2⅓ innings striking out four while allowing just two LeBeau’s hits. With the win LeBeau’s improved to 1-1 after the first week of play.

Thursday, May 2

DeBross Oil 19, New Bedford Fire 2: Max Mutnansky was locked in for his first start of the season on the mound. Mutnansky tossed a complete game striking out eleven, scattering three hits, allowing two runs while picking up the win for his Oilers. He also scored three runs. Austin Rodrigues led off the second inning with a double that opened the door for a fourteen run second inning that was highlighted by a Parker Pacheco grand slam home run. Camden Harrison, Logan Pacheco, Jonathan DaSilva, and Ben Bedard were all key contributors to the Oiler offense. J. C. Robles had an RBI triple, knocking in Kaiden Murphy who had singled earlier for the Fire Department. With the win DeBross improves to 2-0 on the young season.

Dave’s 20, A.C.G. 1: Richie Gaskins scored four times, he also went 3-3 at the plate and was the winning pitcher. Gaskins struck out three, allowing one run before being relieved by Logan Bielski. Sean Pimental tripled; Christian Vaz recorded his first career hit in the second inning driving in run. Angelo Debortoli, Brayden and Logan Bielski and Maddox Santos all checked in offensively for Dave’s. Tony Correia stroked a first inning base hit and was knocked in by a Justin Aguiar base hit for A.C.G.
