NO. 11 KENTRIDGE 46, NO. 14 PUYALLUP 44

The Chargers and Vikings nearly battled to a stalemate as a final bucket from freshman Jaya Brown sealed the deal for Kentridge.

Early in the second quarter and finding themselves down 12-6, the Chargers went on a 6-0 run to tie the game up and shift the momentum back their way. Kentridge rode that momentum and overtook Puyallup for a 21-19 lead entering halftime.

That two point lead would remain critical as both teams scored 25 points in the second half, giving the Chargers the narrow win and the chance to continue their season.

“The big thing is that we used our athleticism to push the tempo. We were a bit timid to begin the game, but we regrouped,” said coach Brad McDowell. “We are a bit younger, so we keep motivations short and sweet. The coaches encouraged them to fight for the loose ball and feel confidence in what they are doing.”

Brown’s game winning bucket came with about a minute left in the game and Kentridge was down 44-43. Spreading the ball out and getting a good lane, the ball was passed under the basket. From there, Brown crashed the board and made the lay-in to take the permanent lead.

Junior Sydney Esperanza led all scorers for the Chargers with 17. Brown chipped in 13 as well. Senior Naomi Hotchkiss led the Vikings with 14 and junior Emily Randolph added 11.

NO. 3 EMERALD RIDGE 55, NO. 6 KENTWOOD 29

The Jaguars had several goals in their win over the Conquerors. First, they wanted to dominate on defense and prevent themselves from fouling if possible. Then it was up to senior Monique Carter, the newly crowned 4A SPSL MVP, to distribute the ball on offense.

Defensively, Emerald Ridge never allowed more than eight points to be scored in a quarter. They limited any look Kentwood had, rotated to the ball efficiently, and kept the pressure up even as they widened the scoring margin.

“We had a great defense, we locked them up and stayed out of foul trouble,” said coach Arvin Mosely. “[Carter] got MVP of the league and it’s because she sets the table for everyone. [Freshman Ryah McGriff] is a handful, she’s gonna be trouble for other teams. [Carter] did everything to make sure everyone got their shot. We weren’t fouling, put a lot of pressure on the ball, and didn’t get too many easy looks.”

McGriff led all scores with 11 points on the night. Behind her were seniors Tami Gallo and Alina Sapilak with nine points each.

The loss doesn’t eliminate the Conquerors, as they will square off against league-rival Kentridge in the next round of districts. Meanwhile, Emerald Ridge is slated to take on Tahoma at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 15 at Curtis High School.

NO. 15 SKYVIEW 66, NO. 10 SOUTH KITSAP 53

For the first three quarters of the game, the Wolves had the energy and communication to take the lead against the Storm. Unfortunately, things quickly came off the rails as Skyview out scored them 23-6 in the final period.

Fatigue set in and despite juniors Kamdyn Hagerty and Grace Degarimore trying to get to their usual spots on the post, the Storm just outlasted them.

“We just had energy and fresh legs coming in. The communication on defense was amazing,” said coach Anthony Lewis. “They were playing for each other, and had great team defense. We got tired in the fourth quarter which led to shots not falling. We stopped looking for the shooters, and that gave them momentum.”

Hagerty and Degarimore were the Wolves’ high scorers in the game, putting up 13 and 12 respectively. However, both of them combined could not keep up with Skyview senior Jordan Labrador-Hallett. The senior shooting guard fetched 27 points on the night, easily leading all scores.

South Kitsap is on the cusp of turning around their program though, as they made the district tournament for the first time since joining the SPSL.

With a whole year’s experience, Lewis hopes to have more kids buy into his philosophy of playing basketball to have fun.

3A

No. 1 PENINSULA 62, No. 8 GIG HARBOR 47

The Seahawks are soaring to the state bracket.

The tournament’s top seed exploded for 30 points in the opening quarter and upended rival Gig Harbor in a home win Friday night.

Peninsula’s Kaylia Heidelberg led the early ambush, posting 16 points and four three-pointers in the first eight minutes. The junior guard finished with 29, a game-high.

The opening-round win in the District 3/4 3A tournament pushed Peninsula into the semifinals on Feb. 15.

Gig Harbor remains in contention for the state tournament next month, but the Tides’ path gets rockier — they’ll need to advance through a loser-out contest on Feb. 14 and win one of two contests on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18 to advance.

Gig Harbor’s Olivia Paul and Riley Peschek countered with 18 and 17 points, respectively, but Peninsula’s lead grew to 20 by intermission and the Tides failed to make up any ground until the fourth.

Peninsula led by as many as 30.

Seahawks senior Sophia Casello added 12 points -- nine in the first quarter -- and five rebounds.

Heidelberg accounted for all of Peninsula’s fourth-quarter points (seven). She and senior forward Brooke Zimmermann snared a team-high six rebounds apiece.

No. 5 NORTH THURSTON 78, No. 4 EVERGREEN (VANCOUVER) 38

North Thurston’s 40-point rout of Evergreen on Friday night quickly morphed from winner-to-state battle between neighboring seeds into a showcase of Soraya Ogaldez’s unstoppable scoring prowess.

The sophomore standout dropped 41 points with ten three-pointers — outscoring all of her opponents combined — in a convincing road win in the opening round of the District 3/4 3A tournament.

Ogaldez jump-started North Thurston’s 15-0 run in the first quarter and finished the period with 16. She had 28 by halftime, helping the Rams push their lead to 23 by intermission.

North Thurston’s Grace Lee and Sadi Tanner added 10 points apiece. Ogaldez snagged eight steals.

North Thurston punched a ticket to regionals with Friday’s win. Evergreen must win two of three district contests next week to remain in contention.

No. 6 BONNEY LAKE 67, No. 2 AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW 63

Bonney Lake fumbled a third-quarter lead but recovered to upset two-seed Auburn Mountainview on the road Friday night.

The opening-round win in the District 3/4 3A tournament cemented a trip to regionals later this month and pushed Bonney Lake into the bracket’s semifinals.

Panthers star center Jazmyn Shipp paced all scorers with 24 and sunk four three-pointers.

Bonney Lake’s Evin Elias added 15 and drained a game-high five triples.

Auburn Mountainview entered the fourth quarter with a one-point lead after trailing by five at the half. Elias led Bonney Lake’s resurgence with nine points in the final period.

Bonney Lake meets Lincoln on Feb. 15 at Auburn High School in the district semifinals. Both programs qualified for regionals, regardless of result.

Auburn Mountainview remains in state contention but needs a pair of wins in loser-out games on Feb. 14 and 16.

The Rams have survived the first of two loser-out contests, the next on the road at No. 2 Auburn Mountainview on Feb. 14. That contest’s winner can advance to regionals with another win on Feb. 16.

Friday’s loss ended Bainbridge’s season.

Timberline owns a 2-0 season series lead over league-rival Gig Harbor, with wins on Dec. 10 and Jan. 25 by scores of 70-56 and 54-48, respectively.

No. 5 GIG HARBOR 70, No. 4 MOUNTAIN VIEW 67 (OT)

The Tides are rolling to regionals.

Gig Harbor jumped to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and led by 11 at halftime. Mountain View crawled back in the second half, enough to require another five minutes before the Tides escaped as victors.

Mountain View needs consecutive wins in the district bracket on Feb. 15 and 17 to secure a regional allocation.

Gig Harbor meets top-seeded Timberline in the district semifinals on Feb. 16 at Auburn High School.
