South Shore League indoor track champs crowned: Top South Shore performers for Feb. 5-10

Monday, Feb. 5

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Middleboro's Isabel Wheeler won the high jump (clearing 5 feet 4 inches), long jump (17-5.25) and 55-meter hurdles (8.48 seconds) to lead the Sachems to the team title at the South Shore League championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. Middleboro scored 110 points. Norwell (57) was second, followed by Randolph (44) in third, East Bridgewater (39) in fourth and Abington (38) in fifth.

Mia Lee-Bowens of Middleboro won the 55m (:7.60) and was second in the 55m hurdles (:8.55), and the Sachems also claimed the 4x800m relay as Meghan Youngquist, Ana Machado,HaleyWashburn and Fiona Clancy finished in 11:37.95.

Randolph's Maryam Barry won the 2-mile (13:08.74) and was third in the mile (6:07.44). Teammate Jayda Adora Bleus won the 300m (:42.02), and the Blue Devils won the 4x200m relay with Tamarre Anilus, Bleus, Omosefe Ighadaro and Sasha Zavala Lopez finishing in 1:53.21.

Abington's Selena Wood won the mile (5:44.74). Other winners: Norwell's Ariana Veneto (1,000m, 3:16.60); EB's Schephatia Feron (shot put, 34-3.25); Sandwich's Megan Chaney (600m, 1:46.11); and Norwell's 4x400m relay of Meredith Cassidy, Meredith Reed, Alexandra Ning and Hannah Morse (4:29.39).

BOYS INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

East Bridgewater's Chris Oman won the 55 meters in a school-record time of 6.59 seconds as the Vikings claimed the team crown at the South Shore League championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. Despite missing several runners due to illness, EB scored 94 points to beat out runner-up Norwell (77). Middleboro (69) was third, followed by Carver (50) and Randolph (22).

EB's Coleman McCarthy won the 2-mile (10:31.16) and was second in the mile (4:55.44), while teammate Brennan Shea won the 55m hurdles in :8.28, leading a 1-2-3 Vikings sweep with Corey Leonard (:8.44) and Emre Barbosa (:8.79). EB also claimed the 4x200m relay with the team of Emmanuel Nelson, Gavin McLoud, Denis O'Donovan and Dan Steele finishing in 1:35.05.

Norwell got wins from Noah Mulligan in the 300m (:36.21), Thomas Corbett in the mile (4:42.60) and the 4x400m relay of Griffin Murphy,Brody McVay, Mulligan and Sam Pesko.

Carver's Camren Allain won both the high jump (6-6) and long jump (20-11.5), setting PRs in each event. Teammate Luke Holden won the 600m (1:26.43).

Middleboro's Lekan Sotonwa won the 1,000m (2:37.82) and ran on the winning 4x800m relay (9:07.41) with James Baldwin, Dante D'Alessandro and Alexander Fregault. Middleboro's Cole Kelleher won the shot put (40-6).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carver's Julia Fernandes scored 25 points in a 56-46 loss to Cohasset, which got big games from Sarah Chenette (20 points, 10 rebounds), Addy Andrews (13 points, 8 assists) and Catherine Toomey (20 rebounds, 12 offensive).

Canton's Mercia Kolokithas scored a career-high 31 points, hitting nine 3-pointers, in a 74-57 win over Stoughton.

Blue Hills' Ally Johnson had 21 points and 5 steals in a 51-45 loss to Upper Cape. Bella Sulfaro (12 points, 4 assists) and Kathleen Murphy (8 points, 7 rebounds) also starred for the Warriors (10-4, 5-1 Mayflower).

Oliver Ames' Avery Gamble scored 15 points in a 54-53 loss to Mansfield. Sarah Hilliard added 14 points for the Tigers.

New Heights Charter rode big games from Naziiah Herisse (16 points, 4 assists, 6 steals), Siyhann Sharp (12 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Navaeh Stephney (11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) to a 64-35 win over Brooke. The Phoenix are 12-2.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Carver's Jameson Helms led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points in a 52-46 win over Westport. Jack Balzarini added 9 for the Crusaders, and Will Ruffini added 8.

Canton's Jamaal McConnell (24 points) and Jeremiah Predin (19 points, 18 rebounds) keyed a 65-52 win over Stoughton.

Tyrin MacDonald (16 points) and Tyler Carini (15 points) starred in a 50-48 win over Cape Cod Tech. Ben Tondorf added 11 points for the Vikings (5-11).

New Heights Charter's Christian Dalton had 16 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in a 78-34 win over Burke. Jonathon Theresias (9 points, 3 rebounds), Rayzhan Innocent (9 points, 2 rebounds) and Jaylen Thomas (7 points, 8 rebounds) also contributed for the Phoenix (11-1).

GIRLS HOCKEY

Milton's Molly Murphy and Mary Lovett each scored twice in a 6-1 win over Newton North/South that clinched a second straight Bay State Conference Herget Division crown. Sabrina Stone and Ellie McConville added goals for the Wildcats (13-3, 10-0).

BOYS HOCKEY

Stoughton/Brockton's Paul Medeiros scored the lone goal in a 6-1 loss to Foxboro. Jake McSweeney had the assist.

WRESTLING

In a 46-27 loss to Braintree, Milton's Mason Pellegri (215 pounds) became the Wildcats' all-time leader in wins with 130, surpassing Jonathan Carrera’s old record of 129. Other Milton wins came from Riley Ellis, Alex Alexis, Luis Bittencourt and Owen Crowley. Winners for Braintree were: Thomas Nguyen, Rory Cusson, Shane Griffiths, Ryan Spahiu, Michael Nigro, Demetres Holley, Jason Nguyen, Rhain Morris and Philip Nguyen.

GYMNASTICS

Sophomore Lily Moreira had the top scores on three of the four events to power Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater to a 142.8-129.25 win over Carver/Middleboro. Moreira posted career-high scores to win bars (meet-high 9.55), beam (9.3) and floor (9.35) and was second on vault (9.0) to teammate Natalia Flores (9.45).
