South Phoenix gets new apartments with affordable rents near future transit line

An apartment complex with affordable rents opened up in south Phoenix Wednesday, adding 308 much-needed homes to the area.

Rents in Vista Ridge at Southern and 19th avenues will start at $1,010 for a one-bedroom apartment and go up to $1,374 for a three-bedroom.

The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in metro Phoenix is $1,385, according to the national multi-family research firm Apartment Advisor.

“Arizona’s tremendous need for workforce and senior affordable housing currently outpaces its supply,” said Owen Metz, senior vice president with the complex’s developer, Dominium.

The apartments were developed for people earning no more than 60% of the median income in south Phoenix.

The new rental homes come with walk-in closets, granite countertops, low-energy windows, low-flow water fixtures and a patio or balcony.

Vista Ridge, which will have nearby light rail access once the south Phoenix line extension is complete, has a fitness room, a clubroom with a fireplace, a game room, a pool, an outdoor fire pit, a community kitchen, a yoga studio, a children’s play center, a pet washing station and a courtyard with cornhole boards.

Dominium is a national affordable apartment builder and has other complexes underway in Arizona.
