South Dade wins 18th state title, all 14 Bucs wrestlers medal; Somerset 1A runner-up

When the curtain went up, South Dade was already holding the trophy.

Once again, the South Dade wrestling machine won the Class 3A boys state wrestling championship at the FHSAA Individually Bracketed Tournament before state title matches ever hit the mats on Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena.

“It will only take me about 10 minutes after we receive this trophy to start worrying about next year,“ South Dade coach Victor Balmeceda said. “And we have nine out of our 14 starters returning.

South Dade rolled up 270.5 points, easily beating second-place Southwest Miami with 139. Even more impressive, for the first time in its storied history, South Dade had all 14 state qualifiers reach the medal stand.

“This was just not a regular state tournament for us,” Balmeceda said. “We came here 14 strong. We were trying to break records. Each one bought in and all 14 got on the podium. I don’t think anyone in the state of Florida has ever done that.”

South Dade can add its latest championship hardware to a pile of 18 IBT state championship trophies and 23 overall -- counting the five FHSAA Duals state titles – when it returns home with four wrestlers that won individual state titles.

He also took second place at Doral Academy as an eighth grader and fifth place as a seventh grader. During his three seasons at South Dade, he has yet to be taken down in any match.
