South Carolina signee Joyce Edwards sets single-game scoring mark in Camden win

After being selected for the McDonald’s All-American game earlier this week, Joyce Edwards delivered an all-american performance Friday night.

The South Carolina signee and Camden High School standout scored a career-high 52 points in helping the Bulldogs to a 98-36 victory.

The 52 points are believed to be a school-record and top her previous career-high of 44 points she had as a freshman against Lugoff-Elgin on Dec. 11, 2020. It was the fifth time in her career she has scored more than 40 points in a game.

Edwards is the first area girls basketball player to score more than 50 points in a game since Keenan’s MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 54 against Wilson on Jan. 18, 2020. Fulwiley and Edwards will be teammates next year at South Carolina.

Edwards, the No. 2 ranked prospect in the country for Class of 2024, was 22-of-26 from the field and was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. She also was close to a triple-double with 18 rebounds, nine assists, eight steals and five blocks.

Camden, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, is 19-2 on the season and leads Region 6-3A with a 6-0 record. The Bulldogs have scored 85 points or more in five of their past six games.

Top-ranked Westwood boys win

The Westwood boys started their second time through Region 4-4A play with a 56-46 win over AC Flora.

The Redhawks, the No. 1 ranked team in 4A, moved to 17-1 on the season and 6-0 in region play. Westwood leads Ridge View by a game in the standings with the two teams playing each other on Feb. 2.

Senior guard TJ Bell led Westwood with 20 points while Zion Brown and Dontae Walters each had 12 points. Brown and Bell came up big in the fourth quarter as Westwood pulled away.

After AC Flora cut the Redhawks’ lead to 39-33, Brown hit back-to-back 3-pointers and then Bell hit a 3-pointer and was fouled to push the lead to 52-34 with 3:24 left.

“I consistently tell the guys we have a run coming so we got to handle our emotions until it comes,” Westwood coach Trent Robinson said. “I challenged them at the end of the third quarter, telling them they need a stop and score, stop and score. We did exactly that and then we hit those threes.”

Westwood did a good job containing AC Flora’s 3-point shooting, limiting the Falcons to just three 3-pointers. The Falcons drained 16 3-pointers a week ago against Lugoff-Elgin.

Cooper Wiley led AC Flora with 13 points.

Friday’s top performances

Lexington, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A boys, won its 20th game of the season with a 72-51 win over Chapin. Texas signee Cam Scott had 25 points, Jaxon Prunty had 21 and Kaleb Evans 16.

The CA Johnson boys went on the road and defeated No. 1-ranked Lewisville, 61-52, in Class A action. Lamont Jackson led the way with 18 points as the Green Horners move into a first-place tie with Great Falls in the 3-A standings.

Presbyterian signee Alex Atkinson scored 28 points as the Lower Richland boys bounced back from their first region loss with a 50-32 win over Brookland-Cayce.

The Northside Christian girls rallied from a double-figure deficit to defeat Thomas Sumter, 67-63, in double overtime. The Crusaders finished the game with just five players after three of them fouled out.
