South Carolina is one of the rainiest states in the US, new report shows. Here’s where it ranks

With climates varying widely across the United States, it’s hard not to be curious about what your state may be known for atmospherically.

It’s no surprise at all to locals and vacationers alike that South Carolina has been getting a lot of rain and stormy weather lately. What may be a surprise, is that the Palmetto State placed in the top 10 in the nation for rainiest states.

So, where exactly did South Carolina rank?

The Palmetto State officially came in at 10th place for being one of the rainiest states in the U.S. throughout a year-long period based off of state-wide average precipitation, according to Current Results, which specializes in weather and science facts.

The state also ranked in second place for being the rainiest state during the summer and in ninth for being the rainiest state during the winter.

Hawaii ranked in first place overall for the year as being the rainiest state in the U.S., with a state-wide average of 63.7 inches (1618 millimeters) of rain a year.

Based on weather data collected from 1991 to 2020 for the US National Centers for Environmental Information, each region in the state had high numbers for annual precipitation totals.

Beaufort had a total of 118 days in a year of averaged precipitation with an averaged total of 45 inches and 1,144 millimeters.

North Myrtle Beach had 122 days of precipitation in a yearly average with 48.5 averaged inches and 1,231 millimeters.

South Carolina’s capital, Columbia, had an average total of 109 days of precipitation in a year, 45.2 inches and 1,149 millimeters.
