Sorry New Haven, but New Jersey is still the pizza capital. Here are some reasons why

The United States has a new pizza capital, and it's not New Jersey. It's not even New York!

According to Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut along with several other Connecticuters the new pizza capital of the United States is New Haven, Connecticut.

As reported by NBC New York, a large group consisting of DeLauro and over 100 Connecticut pizza makers, legislatures, vets, and community leaders were planning on flying to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to enter a statement into the Congressional Record declaring New Haven the "Pizza Capital of the Unites States" and Connecticut as the "Pizza State."

This declaration may be shocking to some as pizza might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Connecticut.

Various social media users have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to express their thoughts on the state's declaration.

"You can argue that New York does not have the best pizza, but you absolutely cannot argue that Connecticut pizza is the best," wrote one user on X.

"New Haven pizza is unique and it's good but saying it's better than NY/NJ pizza is absolutely insane," posted another.

Earlier this year on Feb. 9, the annually celebrated holiday of National Pizza Day, Gov. Phil Murphy read New Jersey's own declaration on why the Garden State is the real pizza capital.

"Everybody knows it already, but Jersey has the best pizza in the entire world. And if you have any doubt, I've got a proclamation right here that's gonna make it official," said Murphy in a video on his X page. "Whereas New Jerseyans have universally superior taste in all things; and whereas living in New Jersey provides a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the very best culinary experiences from across the globe; and whereas, New Jersey is proudly home to one of the most robust Italian American communities in the nation; and whereas, pizza has become a beloved and celebrated staple of American cuisine."

He finished his proclamation by sharing that New Jersey's first pizzerias opened their doors about 100 years ago and that the state is now home to over 2,000 pizzerias, most of which are family operated and continue to thrive due to their recipes that have been passed down through generations.

Murphy officially named Feb. 9 New Jersey Pizza Day and declared New Jersey the "indisputable pizza capital of the world."

With thin, foldable crust, fresh flavors, and generous toppings, who doesn't love a good Jersey-style slice?

New Jersey's pizza can even be found among the best in the world with Jersey City's Razza Pizza Artigianale coming in at No. 11 on 50 Top Pizza's list of the best pizza in the world in 2023.

Also among the top 100 are six pizza joints in New York, three in Florida, one in Portland, Oregon, one in San Francisco, one in Phoenix, one in South Kingston, Rhode Island and one in Chicago ... none from New Haven, Connecticut.

Of course, Italy overwhelmingly dominated the list.

According to Food and Wine, which declared New Jersey the best pizza state in 2021, "New Jersey is the best place to eat pizza in the country right now. The state is one in an elite group remaining true to its heritage."

"Besides having the best new pizza in America, New Jersey also has some of the best, oldest pizzas in America, down in Trenton, where they don't call it pizza at all but rather tomato pie," says the article.

Connecticut came in second on Food and Wine's list.

So, which state do you think should be declared the pizza capital?

In true Jersey fashion, many New Jerseyans will likely continue to defend Jersey's pizza as the country's top slice.
