Sophia Bush Breaks Silence on 'Brutal' Divorce, Fertility Journey and Affair Rumors

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush appears to officially be entering her healed era.

The 41-year-old actress, activist and podcast host recently sat down for a vulnerable new interview, speaking publicly for the first time about her new relationship with former soccer star Ashlyn Harris following her 2023 divorce from now ex-husband, Grant Hughes.

In the interview for Glamour Magazine published Thursday, April 25, Bush spoke candidly about the downfall of her relationship with Hughes, noting that when their marriage became challenging, she realized, "the person I had chosen to be my partner didn't necessarily speak the same emotional language I did."

At the time, the One Tree Hill actress was also "in the depths and heartbreak of the fertility process," which she chose to keep private at the time.

"I was trying to get through months of endless ultrasounds, hormone shots, so many blood draws that I have scar tissue in my veins, and retrieval after retrieval," she said, while noting that she felt something inside her "seismically shift" during the process.

"Six months into that journey, I think I knew deep down that I absolutely had made a mistake," she candidly confessed.

By August 2023, Bush filed to divorce Hughes and was living alone in Los Angeles while seeking support and comfort from friends and other women going through similar situations.

That's when she reconnected with Harris, 38, whom she first met back in 2019. At the time of their reuniting, the former athlete was also in the midst of her own divorce from ex-wife Ali Krieger.

"I didn’t expect to find love in this support system," she said, wondering if all along she had been "fated" to find Harris after suffering so much previous heartbreak.

When Bush and Harris were first romantically linked, rumors of a possible affair began plaguing headlines, though Bush insisted in the new interview that the claims were nothing but "blatant lies."

"It’s painful to be doing deep work and have it picked apart by clueless strangers," the Chicago P.D. alum said in the interview, reminding herself, "Everyone that matters to me knows what’s true and what isn’t."

Despite calling the whole experience "brutal" and "painful" as outside voices tried to tear down her newfound love, Bush assured fans that she has "never operated out of more integrity in [her] life" than she is now.

"I finally feel like I can breathe," she stated.

And while Bush said she doesn't necessarily agree with the sentiment of having to "come out" in 2024, she proudly declared the best word to describe herself now is "queer."

"I can’t say it without smiling, actually," she said. "And that feels pretty great."
