Sonic’s newest slush is a nod to a rare solar eclipse set cross the U.S.

The blackout slush float launches nationwide Monday, March 25, and comes with a pair of special viewing glasses to watch the “out-of-this world” spectacle, while supplies last, the restaurant said in a news release.

Flavored with cotton candy and dragon fruit, the limited-time treat is black in color and topped with soft serve and “galaxy-themed sprinkles,” according to a product description.

Its dark color represents the brief period of darkness as the eclipse creeps across Mexico, the U.S. and Canada on Monday, April 8, the restaurant said.

North America’s last total solar eclipse occurred in 2017, and the next won’t happen until 2044, according to former NASA astronaut Terry Virts.

The blackout slush float is available for a limited time, though Sonic didn’t say for how long. Pricing information wasn’t immediately available.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, blocking the sun to create a dusk-like darkness, according to NASA.

Experts say the 2024 total solar eclipse will carve a narrow track across several U.S. states in the “path of totality.”

“The path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine,” according to NASA.

A total solar eclipse will also be visible in parts of Tennessee and Michigan while a partial eclipse “will be visible throughout all 48 contiguous U.S. states,” experts said.

Those planning to watch it are encouraged to wear proper eye protection for safety.
