Need something to do for Mother’s Day in Wichita? Check this list of weekend activities

Mother’s Day weekend has arrived. If you haven’t yet made plans to celebrate mom, save yourself some last-minute panic by using this list of fun things to do this weekend in and around Wichita:

Celebrate Mother’s Day

Sunday, Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., and Botanica, 701 N. Amidon

If you want to celebrate mom over Mother’s Day brunch this weekend, lots of Wichita restaurants will be putting on special meals, and you can see a full list of them on Dining with Denise on Facebook or at www.kansas.com/dining. If you also want an after-brunch activity, a couple of other Mother’s Day events are happening around the area:

Mother’s Day at the Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd: Moms get in free on Sunday as long as they are accompanied by someone paying for admission. Zoo members will get in free with a membership card and photo ID. The zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Mother’s Day at Botanica, 701 N. Amidon: The local gardens will admit moms for free from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, when the Wichita Area Garden Council will be putting on its Mother’s Day Expo. Area garden clubs will be there, as will garden vendors, art vendors, food trucks and live music performers. Regular admission applies to everyone but moms.

Baby animal festival

11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, 7910 N. Roy L. Smith Road, Nickerson

Hedricks Exotic Animal Farm in Nickerson, about an hour northwest of Wichita, is putting on its annual Hedricks Baby Animal Festival on Saturday. Visitors will be able to interact with and feed the farm’s animals, which include camels, zebras, ostriches, giraffes and kangaroos. Visitors will also be able to interact with and feed several of the babies that have been born this spring. The afternoon will include camel rides, live music and more. Last chance for T-Swift laser show

Friday through Monday, Exploration Place Dome Theater, 300 N. McLean

If you’re a Swiftie and you haven’t yet caught Exploration Place’s Taylor Swift Laser Show, be warned that it runs for only four more days. The 45-minute immersive laser show, which is at Exploration Place’s Dome Theater, will be shown at 4 p.m. daily through Monday and then will be gone. Projected onto the Dome’s 60-foot screen, the show is set to 13 of Swift’s biggest hits, including “Bad Blood” and “Shake It Off.” People are encouraged to sing and dance along. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for children ages 3-11 and for seniors 65 and over, and $6 for members at exploration.org/event/laser-taylor-swift/

George Thorogood and The Destroyers

7:30 p.m. Sunday, 11120 W. Kellogg

George Thorogood and The Destroyers will bring their tour, titled “Bad All Over the World – 50 Years of Rock,” to Wichita’s Cotillion Ballroom on Sunday night. The blues band, which has been together since 1973, is best known for the mega hit “Bad to the Bone.” The concert is at 7:30 p.m. but doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Joe Waters will open the show. Candlelight: A Tribute to Queen

6:30 p.m. Thursday, Kansas Aviation Museum, 3350 George Washington Blvd.

Fever, the production company that has been putting on candlelight concerts at the Kansas Aviation Museum, has another one coming up this week, and it will feature the music of Queen. The show, which starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, will feature a string quartet performing amid the glow of candlelight. The program will include some of Queen’s biggest hits, such as “We Will Rock You,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Are the Champions.” The hour-long shows are appropriate for ages 8 and over, though anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
