Sol House in Northampton has 51-flat plan unveiled by developer

A five-storey former office block could be transformed into 51 apartments under plans unveiled by a developer.

Regent Portfolio Limited has applied to convert Sol House, in Northampton town centre, into the new accommodation.

The site, in St Katherine's Street, fronts on to a leisure complex, which is home to a 10-screen Vue cinema, Ibis Hotel and gym.

The development would host 45 one-bed flats and six two-bed homes if approved by West Northamptonshire Council.

Regent Porfolio applied for a change of use from office space to residential use, plans showed.

"The use of this floorspace as residential would be likely to generate less traffic when compared to the former Class E use which operated from the site," a planning statement said.

"On that basis the traffic created by this proposed development would not lead to situations detrimental to highway safety."

The developer said it would have to create up to 57 parking spaces as part of the project, with the site home to just eight at present.

West Northamptonshire Council said it would issue a decision by 4 June.
