A team-by-team look at what to expect from the Greater Middlesex Conference and area Union County Conference softball squads in 2024

GREATER MIDDLESEX CONFERENCE

Red Division

J.P. STEVENS

Coach: Caroline Ratti, second season

Last season record: 10-16

Top letterwinners lost: Nicolette DiSerio (C), McKenna Graham (SS), Riley Colling (LF), Emma Ricigliano (CF).

Roster: Emma Clemens (Sr., IF), Faith Fiumaro (Sr., 1B), Vanessa Yim (Sr., P/OF), Olivia Ricigliano (Jr., OF/P), Danielle Bosslett (Jr., UT), Bella Malinconico (So., 3B), Yana Chaudhari (So., OF), Mayra Rajput (So., UT), Diva Vachhani (So., UT), Anika Rusche (So., UT), Sofia Malinconico (Fr., C), Amishi Gupta (Fr., UT), Katelyn Damatta (Fr., UT).

Outlook: The Hawks had a six-game losing streak and another string of four consecutive scoreless outings last season, but did their best work in the state tournament, winning twice before falling to mighty Hillsborough in the sectional semifinals. Three seniors return, and each is counted on for leadership and production. That includes infielder Emma Clemens (.360 batting average), first baseman Faith Fiumaro, and pitcher Vanessa Yim. The biggest loss is catcher Nicolette DiSerio, with talented freshman Sofia Malinconico slated to replace her.

METUCHEN

Coach: Michelle Huff, first season

Last season record: 19-7

Top letterwinners lost: Brianna De La Fuente (C), Mia Szap (SS), Abby Kozo (OF/P), Kylie Flaherty (1B).

Roster: Mary Kate Cummings (Sr., 1B/C), Leslie Flaherty (Sr., C/SS), Kiara Guzman (Sr., IF), Mary McGrath (Sr., 3B/1B), Ava Barach (Jr., OF), Hannah Mindler (Jr., OF), Eva Szap (Jr., 2B/P), Alicia Montalbano (So., P/2B), Kathryn Morano (So., SS/3B), Adrianna Siedenburg (So., OF), Leah Dagan (So., OF), Olivia Miller (So., OF), Gabby Layton (So., IF/OF), Eva Fernandez (Fr., IF/OF), Anna Knehans (Fr., IF/OF), Sarah Lindeman (Fr., IF/OF), Claire Polakowski (Fr., IF/OF), Dakota Gibbons (So., IF/OF), Scarlett Vidal (Jr., IF/OF).

Outlook: Michelle Huff, who was the head coach at Plainfield for four years, winning a Courier News Coach of the Year Award in 2018, and then assisted at Metuchen for the last three seasons, takes over as the program’s head coach and inherits a team that lost heavily to graduation. That included four players who combined for 30 home runs and 127 RBI for a team that advanced to the GMCT final, losing to a team in St. Thomas against which three of the Bulldogs’ losses were suffered a year ago. Fortunately, enough talent remains to keep them in contention for the divisional crown. Leslie Flaherty brings 118 career hits, 104 RBI, 19 HR and a .502 batting average into her senior campaign. Sophomore Alicia Montalbano hurled a majority of the team’s innings (83), striking out 104 with a 3.04 ERA, and junior Eva Szap will also pitch in. Senior Kiara Guzman, who hit .420 and is one of the area’s finer second baseman, injured a wrist just before practice started and is out indefinitely.

MONROE

Coach: Marissa Vogtman, first season

Last season record: 4-17

Top letterwinners lost: Angelina Guida (3B), Samantha Gonchar (CF), Isabella Middleton (1B), Allison Grosser (2B).

Roster: Ava Kwitkowski (Sr., SS), Paige Matson (Sr., C), Olivia Westervelt (Sr., OF), Isabella Diaz (Sr., OF), Jade Kuhn (Sr., OF), Monica Bukowczyk (Jr., P/1B), Brielle Zarsky (Jr./3B), Brianna Lavan (Jr., 2B), Alyssa Mustillo (Jr., IF), Lily Holeman (So. P/1B), Brianna Bukowczyk (Fr., P/OF).

Outlook: Marissa Vogtman, who played at Central Regional and has served as the Falcons junior varsity coach for the past six years, takes over the varsity reins. Shortstop Ava Kwitkowski batted.429 as a junior and is the top returning hitter. Junior Monica Bukowczyk assumed the bulk of innings in the circle and she’ll be joined by her younger sister, Brianna, and sophomore Lilly Holeman. Senior catcher Paige Matson and juniors Brielle Zarsky and Brianna Lavan will be tasked with making up for the losses to graduation.

OLD BRIDGE

Coach: Angela D’Amico, eighth season

Last season record: 11-16

Top letterwinners lost: Kimiko Almazan (2B), Sara Nazzaro (UT).

Roster: Savannah Martinez (Sr., CF), Zoe Milonopoulos (Sr., SS), Dimitra Milonopoulos (Sr., C), Ava Accettulli (Sr., 2B), Jaylen Campbell (Sr., OF), Ava DiMartini (Sr., OF), Emma DiMartini (Sr., OF), Ava Pullano (Jr., 1B), Amanda Jupinka (Jr., 1B), Katie Gallo (Jr., 1B), Gianna Velez (Jr., 3B), Alexandria Hunt (Jr., OF), Danielle Flores (So., UT), Gianna Lombardi (So., P), Nicolette Ampania (Fr., UT), Kendall Riggleman (Fr., P).

Outlook: The Knights started slowly last year, losing five in a row after a season-opening, one-run triumph, but put together a five-game winning streak late in the year that propelled them into the semifinal round of the Central Group 4 playoffs. This is a veteran squad that will often feature seven seniors in the lineup, led by catcher Dimitra Milonopoulos, a first-team All-Area choice who hit .477 last season, while rapping 41 hits and throwing out 32 runners. Her sister, Dimitra, a shortstop, and centerfielder Savannah Martinez, are expected to join her as the leaders. Sophomore Gianna Lombardi took the circle for all but 14 innings as a freshman and she’ll get some help from freshman Kendall Riggleman.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Heather Wells, 13th season

Last season record: 7-17

Top letterwinners lost: Ella Squaires (OF), Morgan Indyk (P).

Roster: Gianna Angermeier (Sr., SS), Amanda Kassabian (Sr., 1B), Sienna Mayo (Sr., OF), Brooke Allen (Jr., OF), Gracie Jairdullo (Jr., C/OF), Natalie Jairdullo (Jr., 2B/3B), Jamie Bistany (So., OF), Amanda Buttitta (So., P/3B), Trisha Govil (So., OF), Isabella Rose Royal (So., OF/3B/2B), Brooke Tarvin (So., C/2B), Emma Galella (Fr., OF/C), Gianna Lagomarsino (Fr., 3B/P), Alexandra Tadros (Fr., OF).

Outlook: The Vikings endured a rebuilding campaign last spring and figure to be improved, but contending for a title in the GMC’s strongest Division is a tough ask. Gianna Angermeier will replace Ella Squaires (.412) at the leadoff spot with sophomore Amanda Buttita (2.86 ERA) taking over from Morgan Indyk as the principal hurler. Brooke Allen batted .430 and joins Buttitta and Bella Royal in the heart of the lineup.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Coach: Don Panzarella, 43rd season

Last season record: 21-7

Top letterwinners lost: Sara McNelly (SS), Grace Capparelli (CF/C).

Roster: Lindsay Oller (Sr., 3B), Hailey Fonti (Sr., 1B), Kelsey Geurts (Sr., OF), Nicole Swatko (Jr., P/OF), Amanda Townley (Jr., C), Erwin Townley (Jr., P/OF), Madison Matusz (Jr., OF), Samantha Droge (Jr., C), Sophia Alvarez (So., 2B).

Outlook: The Tigers dropped a one-run decision to eventual champion St. Thomas Aquinas in the GMCT semifinals and advanced to the sectional final a year ago, and with a horde of returning talent, as much can be expected of this year’s club, if not more. Senior third baseman Lindsay Oller was an All-Area choice last year after hitting .448 on 43 hits with 10 home runs and 37 RBI. She’ll be joined at the top of the order by veterans Sophia Alvarez (.392), Nicole Swatko (.373) and Hailey Fonti (.333), so expect South Plainfield to take the field with the lead often when on the road. Sophomore Erin Townley (11-3, 1.97), who recorded all five of the team’s post-season wins last year, rejoins Swatko on the pitching staff.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

Coach: Missy Collazo, 16th season

Last season record: 23-4

Top letterwinners lost: Mary Kate Murray (3B), Amya Hill (CF).

Roster: Hayley Wieczerzak (Sr., P/SS), Sophia Casalinuovov (Jr., P/2B/OF), Kamerin Collado (Jr., 2B/3B/OF), Sophia Colucci (Jr., 3B/OF), Brielle Cubala (Jr., 1B), Natalie Kandel (Jr., 2B/SS), Liz Negron (Jr., P/SS), Gwen Negron (Jr., C), Melody Webb (Jr., OF), Ariana Barge (So., OF), Alyssa Collins (So., OF), Hailey Krainski (So., C), Olivia Guarino (So., OF), Adrianna Torres (So., C/1B), Leanne Higgins (Fr., P/OF), Megyan Kerstetter (Fr., 2B/SS), Natalie Acevedo (Fr., 2B/SS/3B).

Outlook: Gone are Mary Kate Murray and the 14 home runs and 28 walks she contributed on offense, and only one senior returns in pitcher and reigning Player of the Year Hayley Wieczerzak. The ace overcame an injured knee to compile some pretty amazing statistics, going 21-3 with a 0.97 ERA and 307 strikeouts in 144 innings. There’s also plenty back on offense, led by juniors Liz Negron (.434) and Melody Webb (.429). The Trojans captured the GMCT title last year and finally defeated nemesis Donovan Catholic, before falling in the Non-Public A South Final to St. John Vianney.

WHITE DIVISION

COLONIA

Coach: Ann Cyrana, 21st season

Last season record: 15-11

Top letterwinners lost: Dylan DaCunha (C), Jordyn Pribila (OF).

Roster: Myiah Sutton (Sr., 3B), Megan DaCunha (Sr., P), Abigail Terebetsky (Sr., OF), Amelia Carrion (Sr., SS), Marisela Cardon (Jr., 2B), Keira Carroll (Jr., P/T), Lyela Nieves, (Jr., OF/UT), Emily Schmidt (Jr., OF), Sydney Leshnower (So., OF), Arabella Palmeri (Sr., OF/UT), Mariella Spina (P/1B), Shelby DeCillis (Jr., C), Rebecca English (Jr.), Calissa Biezewski-Carter (So.), Kayden Gordon (So.), Christina Grasso (So.), Mia Lavoura (So.).

Outlook: The Patriots return 11 players from a squad that posted a 6-4 record in the competitive White Division, and it’s a balanced group of veterans with four seniors, four juniors and three sophomores. Heading the returnees is senior third baseman Myiah Sutton, an All-Area choice after batting ,482 with 41 hits and 30 RBI. Colonia also has the luxury of three pitchers with varsity experience in senior Megan DaCunha, junior Keira Carroll and sophomore Mariella Spina.

EAST BRUNSWICK

Coach: Kevin Brady, 26th season

Last season record: 19-7

Top letterwinners lost: Brooke Motusesky (1B), Nicole Motusesky (CF/SS), Samantha Motusesky (Sr., 3B/C), Julia Thiel (Sr., 2B/P).

Roster: Caitlin Gay (Sr., P/SS), Elisabeth Post (Sr., 3B/C), Carmela DeMaio (Sr., OF), Jocelyn Nazario (Sr., P/3B), D’Liah Kercado (Jr.), Gabriella Nieves (Sr., 3B), Veronica Losada (Sr., 1B), Sofia Grosso (Sr., OF), Rebecca Post (Sr., P), Gabriella Bagalla (Jr.), Annabella Stagliano.

Outlook: After dropping their season opener last year, the Bears reeled off eight consecutive victories and never lost back-to-back games all season. Veteran skipper Kevin Brady needs to make up for some major losses in the attack including the Motuseskys, who drove in 49 runs between them, and Julia Thiel (.400, 36 RBI). East Brunswick boasts the return of three pitchers, each of whom tossed 20 or more innings, in seniors Caitlin Gay, Jocelyn Nazario and junior Annabella Stagliano. East Brunswick shared the divisional crown with Spotswood last year and a similar dogfight should ensue this spring.

J.F. KENNEDY

Coach: Maureen Gallagher, 16th season

Last season record: 6-13

Top letterwinners lost: Meleny Sena (C), Angelica Rosario (P), Genesis Dlugosz (OF).

Roster: Marialys Ricourt (Sr., SS), Lorelei Lorentzen (Jr., CF), Gianna Rios (Sr., C), Mia Montanez (Jr.,1B/P), Kristinka Kuzar (Sr., OF), Courtney Paulikas (So., P/1B), Roselyn Giordano (So., OF), Madelyn Spearnock (So., 2B), Aryanna Dlugosz (Jr., OF), Kylie Ondeyko (Fr., 3B), Isabella Aquino (Fr., UT), Kianna Rodriguez (Fr., OF).

Outlook: Things are looking up in Iselin and it starts at the top of the order, where junior Lorelei Lorentzen returns after sitting out last season due to injury following a promising freshman campaign in which she batted .420 with 29 hits. She’ll be followed in the order by seniors Marialys Ricourt (.529) and Gianna Rios (.414). Sophomore Courtney Paulikas, who will bat cleanup, will take over in the circle, with Lorentzen and Mia Montanez providing respite as needed.

NORTH PLAINFIELD

Coach: Kaleigh Oplinger, third season

Last season record: 1-22

Top letterwinners lost: Ava Brown (P), Desirae Acevedo (C).

Roster: Sarah Zaher (Sr., SS), Jackeline Bail Martinez (Sr., UT/P), Shelsea Escobar-Moreira (Sr., OF), Ashley Lopez (Sr., OF), Naylani Delvalle (Jr., C/UT), Jordan Phillips (Jr., OF), Taylor Mooney (Jr., 1B/OF), Samantha Colon (Jr., 3B), Jada Pinzon (Jr., UT), Jasani Vizcaino (Jr., 2B/OF), Alyson Barbosa Munoz (So., P), Laquisha Tkokronolo (So., P/2B), Jordyn Barcelo (So., P/2B), Arianne Brown (So., UT), Sofia Capodiferro (Fr., SS).

Outlook: The Canucks failed to win a divisional game in their inaugural GMC campaign and will once again compete in a division a level or two above where they probably belong. Ava Brown threw all but three innings for North Plainfield last spring, and a trio of sophomores -- Alyson Barbosa, Jordyn Barcelo and Laquisha Tkokronolo -- will share time replacing her. Shortstop Sarah Zaher, beginning here third varsity campaign, is expected to lead. Juniors Jasani Vizcaino, Taylor Mooney, Samantha Colon and Jordan Phillips are all returning starters and provide a solid base for next season, should the Canucks move to a more comfortable setting in the next GMC divisional realignment.

SAYREVILLE

Coach: Amanda Moken, fourth season

Last season record: 9-10

Top letterwinners lost: Megan McKay (SS), Dylan Arena (RF).

Roster: Jillian Bourbeau (Sr., C), Caydence Barton (Sr., SS /P), Rose Joseph (Jr., 1B), Hailey Kilpatrick (Jr., 2B/3B), Isabella Swanton (Jr., 3B), Danielle Zapoticzny (Jr., LF), Ashleigh Wisniewski (Jr., RF), Josie Vanore, (So., P / 3B), Mya Infante (So., CF), Gianna Falto (Soph., OF/UT), Sophia Matula (So., OF).

Outlook: There’s plenty of experience to build on as the Bombers try to improve on their fourth-place finish in the seven-team division. Sayreville should have some pop at the top of the order, with Caydence Barton (.333) slated to lead off, Mya Infante batting third (.328), and junior Rose Joseph (.417, 20 RBI) hitting clean up. Barton will once again share pitching chores with sophomore Josie Vanore, while catcher Jillian Bourbeau -- one of only two seniors, along with Barton – is counted on for leadership behind the plate.

SPOTSWOOD

Coach: Vin Vizzi, fifth season

Last season record: 23-5

Top letterwinners lost: Jenn Pokropinski (3B), Alex Diaz (SS/P), Cynthia Rucinski (1B/P), Karina Jennings (OF), Jenna Dumanski (C), Emily Yatsko (OF), Alice Melvin (OF/P), Gabby Diaz (C), Maddie Bella (IF), Jadyn Santora (IF).

Roster: Bella Vitale (Sr., SS/2B), Maya Redondo (Sr., 1B), Molly Walsh (Sr., OF), Victoria Ziegler (Sr., C), Hanna Brown (Sr., OF), Ava Mormile (Jr., P), Delanie DiStefano (Jr., OF), Hannah Graulich (Jr., OF), Lily Cunningham (Jr., P/OF), Reese Cunningham (Jr., C), Lara Yarnall (So., 2B), Juliana Ziegler (Fr., 3B), Gabby Hill (Fr., SS), Mikayla Ott (So., P/OF), Alyssa Metz (Sr., 2B), Juliana Fulinello (Sr., SS), Skye Palacios (So., OF), Sasha Soffer (Jr., 2B/SS).

Outlook: The Chargers incurred severe losses to graduation from the team that shared the divisional title with East Brunswick a year ago, including All-Area choices Jenn Pokropinski (.518, 46 RBI) and Alex Diaz (.430). Fortunately, a third team All-Area selection returns in junior pitcher Ava Mormile, who compiled a 12-2 record and 1.55 ERA while striking out 124 in just 62 frames. Only 44 of the team’s 219 RBI return but there’s a large crop of talented newcomers that should keep Spotswood in the hunt for the divisional crown once again.

WOODBRIDGE

Coach: Michael Jago, first season

Last season record: 9-11

Top letterwinners lost: Madison Rackett (P), Amber Miltenberg (C), Gianna Orten (2B), Leah Kripaitis (CF), Giavanna Polak (RF).

Roster: Vanessa Morales (Sr., SS), Grace Musselman (Sr., C), Quinn Boyd (Jr., CF), Holly Casaliggi (Jr., C), Gabriella Montalvo (Jr., OF), Kylie Rackett (Jr., P/3B), Gianna Sheridan (Jr., OF), Gia Allan (So., 2B/OF), Madelyn Brenner (So., P/3B), Giavanna Pedde (So., 1B/P), Riley Vazquez (So., 2B/SS/OF), Taylor Woods (So., OF), Macie Mastrola (Fr., 1B/OF), Olivia Bekesy (Fr., C).

Outlook: Michael Jago, son of the Barrons’ Hall of Fame coach Stew Jago, takes over the program on an interim basis as head coach Courtney Murgittroyd is out on maternity leave after delivering her first child in January. While Woodbridge lost heavily to graduation there is a promising group of newcomers for a squad that looks to contend in the division. Senior shortstop Vanessa Morales batted .338 with 10 extra-base hits a year ago, while sophomore Gia Allan hit .405 as a freshman. Pitcher Madison Rackett graduated with those responsibilities to be shared by her younger sister, Kylie, and sophomores Madelyn Brenner and Giavanna Pedde.

BLUE DIVISION

CARTERET

Coach: Brian Cherepski, sixth season

Last season record: 4-16

Top letterwinners lost: Kira Sliziewicz (P), Sinae Vega (OF).

Roster: Trinity Bernardino (Fr., SS), Kaelynn Chalfant (So., OF), Kallie Coghan (Sr., IF), Cienna Diaz (Jr., 1B), Arianna King (Jr., UT), Miyah Knight (Fr., C), Mariah Muniz (So., UT), Jayanalis Pagan (So., P), Talia Pitt (So., OF), Daniela Portillo (Jr., C), Gloria Sanchez (Sr., P), Jesse Sendatch (Fr., OF), Keilani Torres (Sr., OF), Erika Valdez (So., UT).

Outlook: The Ramblers graduated just two seniors, but they were the team’s two leading hitters and primary pitcher. Veterans Cienna Diaz, Daniella Portillo and Kallie Coghan are counted on for leadership on a young team that does not a return a batter who hit over .300. Freshman Jayanalis Pagan will be the primary pitcher and classmate Trinity Bernardino will patrol shortstop and bat near the middle of the order.

EDISON

Coach: Marylynn Muldowney, fourth season

Last season record: 12-10

Top letterwinners lost: Allison Dima (OF/P), Cadence Sarni (UT), Isabella Wertz (3B/C), Kayla Vicidomini (OF).

Outlook: The Eagles hope to build on a strong 7-4 finish, which included a trip to the GMC Invitational final, where it lost by a run to Middlesex. Kelly Roe was an all-division selection last year as a sophomore, batting .444 with 36 RBI. Ava Austin handled the majority of the pitching load last year, and Nalini Parekh, an impressive freshman, will assume some of that burden.

MIDDLESEX

Coach: Chris Chismar, eighth season

Last season record: 16-10

Top letterwinners lost: None

Roster: Peyton Chie (Sr., P), McKenna Healey (Sr., C), Jaclyn DeShields (Sr., SS), Jamie Gorel (Sr., 2B), Alexis Rand (Sr., OF),

Outlook: The Blue Jays compiled a 6-1 postseason record last year, winning the GMC Invitational title and advancing to the Central Group 1 championship game. With everyone returning and five promising freshmen, some of who will be asked to contribute right away, there’s no reason to expect a drop off. Senior Peyton Chie (.426), who has 90 career hits, hurled all but 3 2/3 innings for Middlesex last year, and freshman Kylie Vitelli is expected to share some of that load. McKenna Healey (.388), who stroked three of the team’s five home runs a year ago, and shortstop Jaclyn DeShields, provide senior leadership up the middle.

NORTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Danielle Tamarana, third season

Last season record: 12-9

Top letter winners lost: Shannon Duffy (OF/C), Alex Bredt (IF), Megan Kindler (2B).

Roster: Victoria Frobosilo (Sr., CF), Jordan Tarabokia (Jr., P), Megan LaVielle (Jr., OF), Lauren Goldenfarb (Jr., IF), Mia Liz (Jr., IF), Kaydence Green (So., LF), Sophielyn Brown (So., OF),

Andrea Harris (So., OF), Saiya Patel (So., P/IF), Caleigh Shulas (So., 1B), Erika Medrano (So., OF), Juliana Williams (Fr. C), Gabriella Melendez (Fr., SS), Ashna Kalawadia (Fr., 2B).

Outlook: The Raiders won their first five games last year and started 10-2 but lost in the opening round of the GMC and state tournaments. The two leading veterans are centerfielder Victoria Frobosilo, the lone senior who batted .633 and needs 30 hits to tie the school record of 118, and pitcher Jordan Tarabokia (2.31 ERA, 165 strikeouts in 106 innings). Sophomore Saiya Patel has been impressive and will ease Tarabokia’s pitching load. Freshmen Juliana Williams and Gabriella Melendez are expected to contribute right away.

PERTH AMBOY

Coach: Patty Bennett, second season

Last season record: 10-12

Top letterwinners lost: Ashlee Duran (1B), Kyara Marquez (P/SS).

OF), Izabella Pardo (So., P/SS), Jaidy Rodriguez (Jr., 2B), Johanny Almonte (Jr., 1B/RF), Kiarelys Santiago Soto (Jr., 3B/SS/LF), Liz Cabrera (Jr., 1B), Mia Santos (Fr., IF/OF), Nicole Cepede (Jr., P/1B), Samarah Kirkland (Sr., 3B/OF), Amaya Rivera (Fr., P/IF)).

Outlook: The Panthers finished second in the division last year and return most of the major contributors. Brianna Estevez batted .514 and has signed with Manhattan to become the first softball player in school history to sign with a D-1 university. She also had a 0.78 ERA and averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning in a limited role in the circle, where she will spell sophomore ace Isabella Pardo, who delivered 45 innings as a freshman while hitting an even .500. Juniors Edith Luciano and Jaidy Rodriguez provide leadership and firm up the middle of the defense.

PISCATAWAY

Coach: Amanda McLean, first season

Last season record: 6-10

Top letterwinners lost: Marlo DeSimone (P), Sam Ortiz.

Roster: Jayla McNeil (Sr.), Juliana Bigol (So., IF), Kendall Brown (Jr.), Aalyiah Chambers (Sr.), Madison Matakevich (Sr.), Marissa Mikita (So., P), Jenna Phelan (Jr.), Maya Roberson (Sr.), Josephine Umana (Sr., IF).

Outlook: Amanda McLean takes over a team that went on a late tear last season, winning three of its last four to advance to the semifinal of the GMC Invitational. The Chiefs lose pitcher Marlo DeSimone, who batted .360 with a team-leading 24 RBI, and leading hitter Sam Ortiz (.420). Kendall Brown is the lone experienced pitcher, with fellow sophomore Marissa Mikita talking some turns, as well. Maya Roberson (.362), Jenna Phelan (.333) and Madison Matakevich (.319) are the top returning threats at the plate.

GOLD DIVISION

EAST BRUNSWICK MAGNET

Coach: Mike Buonaguro, 12th season

Last season record: 17-3

Top letterwinners lost: Haley Lopez (C), Kayla Oliveira (3B/C), Danielle Mara (OF/2B).

Outlook: The Tigers joined St. Thomas Aquinas and Mother Seton as undefeated GMC division winners a year ago, and also tacked on the NJTAC state title. Most of the key components return, especially senior pitcher Aralyn Torres and sophomore catcher Makayla Caban, who form one of the GMC’s most dynamic batteries. Torres threw every pitch for East Brunswick Magnet last year, compiling a 2.88 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 124 innings while also hitting .457. Caban batted .576 with eight triples and 30 stolen bases. Seniors Rayna Serronico (.421) and Nicolena Giddis (.356) are also proven at the plate.

HIGHLAND PARK

Coach: Lori Szentygorgyi, 20th season

Last season record: 11-10

Top letterwinners lost: India Fields (1B), Lila Shahidi (3B).

Roster: Jaya Mitchell (Sr., PR), Flor Quesada (Sr., 2B/OF), Michelle Edralin (Sr., C/P), Summer Brown (Sr.), Alexis Valenta (Sr., C/3B), Vanessa Kohler (Jr., SS), Francesca Connelly (Sr.), Melissa Evans (So.), Cora Kaper-Dale (So.), Selin Kim (Sr.), Ava Kohler (So.).

Outlook: The Owls graduate a big bat in the middle of the lineup in India Fields (.455, 17 RBI) but retain another in C/3B Alexis Valenta (.451, 25 RBI). All of the pitching returns in senior starter Michelle Edralin and sophomore Ava Kohler. Thought only a sophomore, Melissa Evans (.429) is another reliable bat in the lineup. Another mid-level finish in the division sounds about right.

PERTH AMBOY MAGNET

Coach: Tyesha Price, first season

Last season record: 10-12

Top letterwinners lost: Amanda Batista (SS/2B), Jalena Santiago (IF/P).

Roster: Kiara Tapia (Sr., IF), Ava Cannici (Sr., IF), Alizaiya Irizarry (Sr.), Arlette Batista (Sr., C/3B), Cyrene Brooks (So.), Mextli Roman (So.).

Outlook: Tyesha Price assumes the helm from Mike Perpente and has the pleasure of coaching one of the Batista sisters. Amanda Batista has moved on after leading the Patriots in every offensive category save one (doubles), hitting .647 and five HR with 33 RBI. Fortunately, sister Arlette, who led the team in doubles (11) while batting .592, returns behind the plate. Pitcher Jalena Santiago departed as well but Perth Amboy Magnet has five players returning who took the circle last spring, including Kiara Tapia, a .441 hitter,

SOUTH AMBOY

Coach: Lindsay Durant, fifth season

Last season record: 11-8

Top letterwinners lost: Evalise Perez (P), Jada Berry (SS), Iyanni Twiggs (3B), Morgan Moskal (2B).

Outlook: The Governors finished second in the division behind unbeaten East Brunswick Magnet and figure to contend for the crown again. While neither pitcher returns, there are veterans throughout the lineup, led by junior catcher Emma Kalantsis (.517). Her younger sister, Gwen, a freshman, can handle either corner infield spot as well as a place in the middle of the lineup. Junior Sara McLaughlin, who batted .400, and freshman Sophia Hernandez will occupy the circle.

SOUTH RIVER

Coach: Nicky Cacoilo, second season

Last season record: 13-12

Top letterwinners lost: Brittany Baber (3B), Jamie Kowalski (C).

Roster: Amiya Osborn (Sr., 1B), Melanie Oliveira (Sr., C/OF), Sabrina Rega (Sr., P/OF), Paige Evans (Sr., P), Nicole Krushinski (Sr., OF), Taylor Krushinski (Sr., C/OF), Natalie McKim (Sr., SS), Leigha Borusovic (Jr., 3B), Aniya Johnson (Jr., P), Veronica McKim (So., 2B).

Outlook: The Rams averaged nearly 10 runs per game last year and graduated two key contributors in Brittany Baber (.553, 11 HR, 45 RBI) and Jamie Kowalski (.432). Junior Aniya Johnson, who compiled a 2.86 ERA while handling most of the pitching chores, and classmate Leigha Borusovic (.429, 4 HR), will try to fill that gap in the middle of the lineup. There’s also a strong class of seven veteran seniors, led by Amiya Osborne and Melanie Oliveira.

TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN

Coach: Nick Badillo

Top letterwinners lost: Ava Acevedo (OF/IF).

Roster: Naveah Brown-Livingston (Jr., IF), Alana Holmes (Sr., OF), Athanasia Kambitsis (Jr., OF), Lacey King (So., OF), Amiya Lamptey (So., IF), Emma Marsh (Sr., OF), Leah McNulty (So., C), Holly Medina (Jr., IF), Rebecca Saleh (So., OF), Elizabeth Solomine (Sr., OF/IF), Kara Spivey (So., P/IF), Marli Szierer (Sr., P/IF), Josie Tipton (Jr., IF), Betsabe Torres (So., IF), Linsey Trejo (Sr., OF), Elissa Velastegui (Sr., IF/OF), Anya Wildgoose (Jr., IF/OF).

Outlook: Most of the Tigers’ success last spring came in a late-season, six-game winning streak, which included state tournament wins over GMC foes Calvary Christian and Wardlaw-Hartridge. Virtually everyone returns, led by senior Marli Szierer, who batted .587 with five HR and 37 RBI. She’s also the primary pitcher, striking out 128 in 69 1/3 innings in 2023. Catcher Lea McNulty battled .364 last year as a freshman and Anya Wildgoose hit .351 as a sophomore.

Roster: Zoha Shaikh (Fr., P), Anushka Patel (Fr., OF), Eva Patel (So., 3B), Nina Nipping (So., 2B), Subiksha Ganesh (Jr., C), Kiah Parekh (Jr., SS), Tanishaa Gujulva (Jr., 3B), Dia Jayadas (Jr., CF), Dhanashri Balamurugan (Jr., C), Arusha Sharma (Jr., 1B), Ruhi Patel (Jr., OF), Sanchi Isloor (Sr., OF), Jotleen Nijjar (Sr., 1B/P), Shruthi Saravanan (Sr., OF), Nisha Hodgins (Sr., OF), Karma Smith (Sr., OF).

Outlook: The Hornets lose some punch from their batting order but retain their best hitter in junior shortstop Kiah Parekh (.545), who belted both of the team’s home runs last year. Sophomore third baseman Eva Patel is the squad’s second-best returning hitter at .308. Senior Jotleen Nijjar hurled all but 2 2/3 of the team’s innings last year but she is expected to move to first base primarily with freshman Zoha Shaikh taking over in the circle.

SILVER DIVISION

CALVARY CHRISTIAN

Coach: Carol Comins, 14th season

Last season record: 10-6

Top letterwinners lost: Lexi O’Toole (P), Lizzie Weaver (C), KariAnn Mecke (3B).

Roster: Ila Rowati (Sr., P/SS), Kristanna Rodriguez (Sr., 3B), Ashley Stroffolino (Sr., CF), Emilie Conger (Sr., OF), Eileen Fogarty (Sr., C/OF), Rachel Schafer (Jr., 1B), Alaina Paulson (Jr., 2B), Sophia Magee (Jr., OF), Makayleigh Fernandes (Fr., OF/P), Ruby Lynch (Fr., SS/OF), Emily Jarema (Fr., OF), Katelyn Lam (Fr., OF), Gianna Maltese (Fr., OF).

Outlook: Long-time coach Carol Comins returns after a two-year hiatus and needs to replace her pitcher, catcher and third baseman KariAnn Mecke, who hit .395. Ila Rowatti, who led the team in hitting (.633) and RBIs (29), takes over in the circle and will be looked to for leadership, along with senior co-captains Ashley Stroffolino and Kristanna Rodriguez. Eileen Fogarty (.378) and Rachel Schafer (.342) bolster the middle of the lineup with Ruby Lynch, one of five promising freshmen, penciled in to bat second.

DUNELLEN

Coach: Kerry Johnson, second season

Last season record: 4-16

Top letterwinners lost: Leah Soto (SS), Maritza Castillo (OF), Isabella Marmolejos (C), Melany Morales (1B).

Roster: Anadalay Buitrago Fitzgerald (Jr., OF), Savanna Burkeen (Fr., 1B/P), Sophie Carranza (Fr., IF), Rose Ciccolella (Fr., 3B), Alexa DeVesa (So., OF), Ty’Asia Dorsey (Sr., 2B/OF), Chloe Downing (So., 2B/OF), Sophia Facciponti-Mennella (Sr., 2B/3B), Kyla Fucito (Fr., 3B/SS), Kaitylee Garcia (Fr., P/IF), Kherington Horne (So., IF), Caroline Privado (Fr., OF), Alyssa Segura (Fr., OF), Kyleigh Tigue (Fr., C/1B), Angelina Tufaro (Sr., OF), Alyssa Vargas Gonzalez (Sr., LF), Gaelle Velez (Fr., C/2B).

Outlook: The Destroyers won three of their first four outings last year, but only managed one more victory the remainder of the season. Four seniors graduated from that team, but there is a huge crop of 10 freshman among which to find their replacements. Sophomore outfielder Alexa DeVesa (.441) is the top returning hitter, with freshmen Kyla Fucito, Gaelle Velez and Savanna Burkeen expected to contribute at the plate right away. Burkeen and classmate Kaitylee Garcia will share pitching responsibilities, while seniors Sophia Facciponti-Mennella, Angelina Tufaro, Ty’Asia Dorsey and Alyssa Vargas Gonzalez are expected to provide leadership for one of the area’s youngest squads.

MOTHER SETON

Coach: Tom Moran, 24th season

Outlook: The Setters breezed through the division without a loss last year, and with nine starters returning, are the favorites in the loop once again. Makayla Martinez batted an insane .652, and 20 of her 30 hits went for extra-bases, including eight homers. She’s also the team’s ace hurler with junior Katelyn Moses (.429) back to assist her. Senior Lucy Giglio (.436) returns behind the plate, Sasha Smyth (.525) will once again cover first, and junior outfielder Anna Maliakal (4 HR) adds some power.

NEW BRUNSWICK

Coach: Edward Rodriguez, second season

Last season record: 2-14

Top letterwinners lost: Dayanara Marquez, Luz Martinez Acevedo (OF).

Roster: Stephanie Diaz (So.), Angeline Rivera (Jr.), Libni Gijon (Jr.), Chanel Duran (Jr.), Janely Rodriguez (So.), Diana Martinez (Jr.), Mia Mendez Hernandez (Sr.).

Outlook: The Zebras dropped their first 10 outings last spring, then won two of their next three. Graduated Luz Martinez Acevedo batted .538 and Dayanara Marquez hit .368, both in limited at bats. Sophomore Janely Rodriguez topped the staff in ERA and strikeouts as a freshman. Junior Libni Gijon hit .450 and led the team in hits last year.

PISCATAWAY MAGNET

Coach: Tom Incognito, first season

Last season record: 3-11

Top letterwinners lost: None

Roster: Gianna Petrillo (Sr., C), Julissa Santana (Sr., IF), Makayla Wise (Jr., P), Caylin Gulick (Jr., P/OF), Shaelin Wise (Sr., IF), Aracely Hernandez (Sr., OF), Jalen McLeod (So., OF), Zaniyah Bourne (Sr., OF), Mya Batts (Fr., IF/OF), Kaitlin Nguyen (Fr., IF), Aliyah Lewis (Fr., IF).

Outlook: Tom Incognito, a longtime baseball coach and the program’s junior varsity softball coach since 2019, inherits a squad that returns every regular, and even adds some promising freshmen. Shaelin Wise (.552), pitcher Makayla Wise (.448), Julissa Santana (.417) and No. 3 hitter Gianna Petrillo (.414) power the line up. Freshmen infielders Kaitlin Nguyen and Aliyah Lewis are slated to bat leadoff and cleanup, respectively, and should have the program trending upward.

SOMERSET TECH

Coach: Jack O’Neill, 12th season

Last season record: 6-15

Top letterwinners lost: Kalina Trent (C), Bella Granzetto (LF), Melissa McEnroe (SS).

Roster: Sabrina Abella (Sr., 1B), Tia Austin (Sr., 2B/OF), Alyssa Schuster (Jr., SS/P), Delilah Bergman (So., 3B/C), Maria O’Farrell (So., C/OF), Samantha Killimet (Sr., P), Samantha Hanlon (Sr., P/2B/OF), Meghan Hanlon (So., OF), Kayla St. Rose (Jr., OF), Charlida Cimino (So., OF/2B), Sofia Del Rocco (Jr., OF), Mackenzie Monto (Jr., OF), Jessica Colon Del Valle (So., OF), Ev Sherman (Fr., OF).

Outlook: The Jaguars suffered their first loss in October when senior shortstop Melissa McEnroe (.380) tore an ACL playing soccer. There’s still plenty of talent to keep Somerset Tech in the middle of the pack in the division, if not higher. Senior Samantha Killimett (.359) took the circle for more than 87 percent of last year’s innings and will serve as the workhorse once again. Senior first baseman Sabrina Abella hit .571, slugged 1.000 and drove in 19 runs in 28 at bats while walking 18 times. Sophomore Maria O’Farrell intends to improve on a breakout freshman campaign in which she hit .340.

WARDLAW-HARTRIDGE

Coach: John Childs, fifth season

Last season record: 17-7

Top letterwinners lost: None

Roster: Sarah Alves (Sr., P/IF), Devon Coleman (Sr., OF/1B), Ancel DeJesus (Jr., OF), Sydney Geissler (Sr., 1B), Natalie Koegler (Sr., 2B), Amelie Leu (Jr., OF/3B), Kacey Marmolejos (Jr., P/IF/OF), Kayla Martel (Sr., OF), Elyssa Ortega (So., SS/P), Sophia Riccio (So., P/C/IF), Giselle Rodriguez (Jr., C), Gianna Rodriguez (So., OF/C).

Outlook: The Rams tied for second in the division last year and figure to contend once again with every major contributor returning. Best of the bunch is senior pitcher Sarah Alves (0.42 ERA, 160 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings while batting .455), who will miss the first two games while competing in the U-18 World Championships for Brazil. No worries when she’s not in the circle, sophomore Sophia Riccio posted a 0.33 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 42 innings and hit .554 with four home runs. Giselle Rodriguez (.484), Elyssa Ortega (.452) and Devon Coleman (.415) join Alves and Riccio at the top of the batting order.

UNION COUNTY CONFERENCE

LINDEN

Coach: Griffin Thomas, second season

Last season record: 9-13

Top letterwinners lost: Nathalie Torres (3B), Evalisse Hernandez (SS).

Roster: Molly McDonald (Sr., P), Erica Hernandez (Sr., C), Kathleen Del Carmen (Sr., CF), Ashley Sanon (Sr., OF), Kayla Sanon (Sr., IF), Angela Stanley (Sr., OF), Emely Ventura (Sr., UT), Sohni Haley (Sr., OF), Clarymel Pichardo (Jr., SS), Carla Louisfant (Jr., IF), Trinity Ellis (Jr., IF), Samantha Torres (Jr., 1B), Kiara Jorge (So., 2B), Alexa Pereira (So., 3B), Sallett Sanchez (So., OF).

Outlook: The Tigers lose the left side of their infield, but return veterans virtually everywhere else, most notably in the circle. Molly McDonald pitched all 101 innings Linden played last spring, striking out 156 batters while hitting a team-leading .357. Erica Hernandez, the second-leading hitter at .354, moves from first base to behind the plate. The team boasts six other seniors and some promising newcomers in senior Angela Stanley, junior Samantha Torres and sophomore Alexa Pereira.

RAHWAY

Coach: Sean Cawley, sixth season

Last season record: 11-12

Top letterwinners lost: Amber Maher (C), Kayla Lebers (P).

Roster: Jenna Maher (Sr., OF), Danielle Maher (So., SS), Gloria Garay (So., OF), Amanda Lebers (Fr., P), Emily Garcia (Fr., P).

Outlook: The Indians got off to a blazing start last year, winning their first four outings and scoring in double digits in each of them, and finished strong by winning five of their last eight. It’s what transpired in between that sullied the campaign before Rahway fell in the second-round of the county tournament and the first round in the state. They lose a second team All-Area catcher in Amber Maher (.493, 27 RBI), and all of their pitching from last year, including Kayla Lebers. Fortunately, those two leave three younger sisters behind as part of a young core to rebuild with. Jenna Maher, with 70 career hits entering her senior campaign, returns in the outfield while her younger sister, Danielle, returns at shortstop. Sophomore Gloria Garay, another sophomore from a family steeped in Rahway tradition, returns in the outfield.
