Softball: Coldwater falls; Quincy and Bronson sweep

COLDWATER – The Coldwater Cardinal softball team dropped two at home versus Harper Creek on Thursday, falling by scores of 6-0 and 4-1.

Game one saw the Harper Creek defense keep Coldwater’s potent offense quiet, as the Cardinals only managed three hits and were not able to score any runs as the Beavers took the 6-0 win.

Mya Porter took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing six innings and a third in the start, allowing six hits and six runs, three earned, with seven walks and nine strikeouts.

Maren DeBeau had the only extra base hit for Coldwater, a double, while Porter and Mackenzie Searing both added singles.

Game two saw Coldwater actually out hit Harper Creek 11-9 however the Cardinals could only manage one run as the Beavers took the 11-9 win.

Searing took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing all seven innings, allowing nine hits and four runs with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Cardinal offense was led by DeBeau who finished 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored while Coley Burkhardt, TK Boyd, and Brooklyn Closson recorded multi-hit games. Boyd chipped in a double in her two-hit game. Also adding hits were Rylie VanAken with a single and an RBI and Maddie Moore with a single.

With the losses the Cardinals fell to 11-20 overall on the season. Coldwater will see action again on Friday when they travel to Otsego.

Quincy sweeps doubleheader from Napoleon

QUINCY – The Quincy Oriole softball team swept a pair of games from an exceptionally good Napoleon program on Thursday, winning by scores of 5-4 and 6-1.

Game one saw Quincy overcome an early 4-2 deficit, scoring two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game before a Soraya Schork RBI single allowed Miley Pointdexter to score, giving the Orioles the 5-4 lead.

Napoleon loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, however pitcher Danika SKirka induced a pop fly to second base, ending the threat and giving the Orioles the e5-4 win.

Skirka took the win on the mound after throwing seven innings in the start, allowing eight hits and four runs, two earned, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Payton Gross finished the game at 3-for-4 with three singles while Mickala Feltner added two singles and two RBIs. Deziray Skirka had a single and an RBI while Kaylee Modert, Josie Mescher, Pointdexter, Danika Skirka and Schork all had singles. Alyssa McCavit and Schork recorded RBIs.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Quincy turn a scoreless game on its head in the fifth inning, scoring six runs over the final three innings to give the Orioles the 6-1 win. Quincy out hit Napoleon 11-3 in the victory.

H. Brown took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing seven innings and allowing three hits and only one run with eight walks and five strikeouts.

Deziray Skirka finished a 2-for-4 day with a double and an RBI; Danika Skirka had an RBI and a double with a run scored; and Mescher added a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Pointdexter, Gross, and Feltner all had multi-hit games with Pointdexter adding an RBI.

With the pair of wins Quincy improves to 19-10 on the season and will next see action Tuesday when they face Hanover Horton.

Bronson sweeps Centreville in non-conference clash, game one sees Harris strike out 17

BRONSON – The Bronson Vikings swept an over matched Centreville team on Wednesday, winning by scores of 9-0 and 7-0.

Game one saw starting pitcher Ashlynn Harris throw a dominant game from the mound, allowing just two hits with no walks and 17 strikeouts.

Lydia Wells led the Vikings on offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a single with two RBIs while Kailynne Scare added a 2-for-3 effort with a single and a home run with three RBIs. Brealyn Lasky also went yard, a solo shot, while Harris and Braelynn Gimenez had multiple hits.

Game two saw the Vikings dominant once again, as Bronson defeated Centreville 7-0.

Harris took the win on the mound again, this time after throwing an inning and two-thirds, allowing one hit, or run with four strikeouts. Mya Webb finished out the game on the mound, throwing five innings and a third with two singles and six strikeouts with only one walk.

Roni Bir and Delanee Carpenter had multi-hit games for Bronson while Wells added a double.

“We are on a good streak right now, the pitching is solid, and we are playing much better defense,” Bronson coach Becky Gray said. “I feel like we have seen all kinds of pitching, and we are learning to be successful and adjust at the plate. I feel we are prepared and ready for districts.”

Bronson improves to 24-9 overall on the season and will be back in action next week when they host either Lawton or Union City on June 1.
