They are proud he’s out!

The international soccer community is celebrating Josh Cavallo’s historic announcement.

Earlier this week, the 21-year-old Australian soccer came out as gay in a heartfelt message that was widely shared on social media.

“There’s something personal that I need to share with everyone. I’m a footballer and I’m gay,” Cavallo said in a video shared on his club’s social media accounts.

“Growing up, I always felt the need to hide myself, you know, because I was ashamed,” Cavallo said. “Ashamed I would never be able to do what I loved and be gay,” he added in the video entitled “Josh’s Truth.”

“All I want to do is to play football and be treated equally. I‘m tired [of] trying to perform at the best of your ability and live this double life. It’s exhausting. It’s something I don’t want anyone to experience,” he added.

Speaking with the BBC, Cavallo later said that after “fighting with my sexuality” for six years, he now “couldn’t be happier” with his decision.

“At the end of the day I just wanted to be happy. This is bigger than football, it’s my life. I’d go home and I wasn’t happy,” he said.

The Adelaide United midfielder is now the only openly gay male top-level professional soccer player in the world. His historic decision quickly reverberated throughout the world of international soccer, with many stars taking to social media to express their admiration and respect.
