SNL Video: Chloe Fineman’s Julia Stiles Impression Gets Outdone by Stiles Herself

The Weekend Update desk pieces have felt a little stale lately, so it’s great to see Chloe Fineman stepping up to bring a little energy to hers. And it doesn’t hurt that her impersonation gets a lift from the actual person she’s impersonating — Julia Stiles.

The segment doesn’t start like the usual Update segment: Fineman doesn’t sit next to either Colin Jost or Michael Che. Instead, she’s in front of the desk wearing an alluring Santa-themed nightgown. “The sexiest gift you can give your partner is trying something new in the bedroom,” she says. Jost is worried that what she’s about to do is inappropriate; Che gets out his popcorn.

It turns out that the sexiest gift you can give is the dance at the end of 2001’s Save the Last Dance. Fineman strips off her nightgown revealing a leotard and workout pants and begins doing Julia Stiles’ choreography from the film.

Specificity is key to comedy, and it’s hard to get more specific than Stiles’ second Julliard audition from the romantic dance drama. Even if you’re not familiar with the movie, the randomness of this being the absolute sexiest thing Fineman can think of — as well as how hard she commits to the dance (sidenote: speaking dialogue while doing a choreographed dance is not at all easy) — makes it worth watching.

There’s a quick shot of Devon Walker as Stiles’ love interest from the movie and it ends — as all good sketches should — with Stiles joining Fineman onstage for the chair dancing portion of the audition. It’s silly and wonderful. And, frankly, it is the sexiest thing you can do in the bedroom. Throw out your Cosmos and Kama Sutras — this year’s sex move is street ballet.
