A snake was chasing a lizard right before Halloween in Miami. Along came a spider web

A Florida black racer snake looking for a treat instead got a trick in Miami Shores on Saturday.

According to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, a call came in from concerned resident Becky Bruk who reported that the critter had gotten caught up in some Halloween decorations outside her home.

Wildlife rescue coordinator George Escobar told the Miami Herald that he decided to make the housecall himself due to the “unusual and special” nature of the case.

Lo and behold, when Escobar arrived, he saw the nonvenomous reptile trapped in the fibers of a fake spider web. He carefully cut away some of the material, extracted the little guy, and transported it back to the North Miami wildlife hospital.

Upon closer inspection, folks at the clinic could see a half-eaten lizard in the snake’s mouth.

“We deduced that the racer was chasing the lizard into the decorations and that’s how they both got entangled there,” Escobar said.

Once the toxic, cotton like material was completely removed, the snake was kept overnight for observation, then released back to the same Shores neighborhood the following day.

The station reminds folks the dangers of “seemingly innocuous” Halloween decorations.

“This incident emphasizes the importance of being mindful of our surroundings and the impact our actions can have on the environment and wildlife, especially during holidays and celebrations,” said the social media post.
