What Features Should I Look for in an Electric Scooter?

“Especially for a purchase as large as this, don’t let the sale price blind you,” says Associate Reviews Editor Tom Price, who covers electric scooters for Popular Mechanics. “Keep a close eye on the battery range, motor power, and safety features.”

Price, who regularly tries out e-scooters by commuting across the Williamsburg Bridge to our office in Midtown Manhattan, has a few guidelines he keeps in mind to ensure your new scooter is up to snuff.

“A quality electric scooter should be able to run for anywhere between 15 to 40 miles before needing to recharge,” he says. “Look at the motor wattage to get a sense of the power and torque on the scooter. A quality option should have 250 watts at a minimum, while more powerful motors give you more freedom to ride up inclines and bridges.”

He also says to look for added features like bells to alert pedestrians, front and back lights for riding at night, and front and back hand brakes. Some scooters only have one brake, which is acceptable, but Price says the added front brake means smoother, more consistent deceleration.

Which Electric Scooters Make the Best Gifts for Kids?

If you’re looking for a fun gift your kids will actually use, an electric scooter is a great pick—they foster spending time outside, being independent, and (crucially) not relying on mom and dad for transportation all the time. But these things can go really fast (up to 45 miles an hour), so it’s important to pick a model that’s appropriate for your kids.

“If you’re shopping for a younger rider, the size and weight of the scooter are vital. As a general rule, make sure the scooter is no taller than the chest of the rider,” says Price. “At the same time, lightweight scooter options will work far better for kids, especially if they are planning on carrying it around themselves.”

Price also purports the importance of wearing a helmet at all times—for both adults and children—to protect your cranium in the event of an accident. There are also some safety measures for inexperienced riders.

“If you’re worried about their riding skills, choose a scooter with a lower max speed, or one with a low-speed or mid-range drive mode,” says Price. These modes limit the max speed either for safety or to help the battery last longer, and some options include parental controls so you can ensure your kids are safe.
