It's not everyday you get a new mattress, so when I got the chance to work on a Saatva mattress review I jumped at the idea. After all, I was already sick of my old mattress. It was great when I first bought it, but after a few months I realized it was too plush for me—a combo sleeper who does a bunch of tossing and turning in the middle of the night.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.saatva.com%2Fmattresses%2Fsaatva-classic&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.womenshealthmag.com%2Flife%2Fa46129841%2Fsaatva-mattress-review%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Classic Mattress</p><p>saatva.com</p><p>$2396.00</p>

So when it came to choosing a Saatva option, I decided to go with the firm version of their Classic Mattress. I usually fall asleep on my stomach before pivoting over to my side, and from interviewing so many sleep experts and chiropractors for Women's Health articles, I'm very aware that firmer options are better for stomach sleepers. Firmer options keep the spine in neutral alignment, while softer ones can cause it to bend or sag into the bed. It has now been three months since I received my mattress, so here's a honest review of how I really feel about it.

What were my first impressions of the Saatva mattress?

Every mattress from Saatva comes with free white glove delivery service, which I feel should be the standard for all mattresses, even bed-in-a-boxes. Mattresses are heavy no matter how much you compress them, and if you don't have a set of extra hands at home that could mean outsourcing to TaskRabbit or tracking down a good samaritan.

The day Saatva's mattress was delivered to my home, I was away on a trip, so I made sure my husband was available to accept. Saatva's white glove delivery service includes set-up of the new mattress and removal of the old one, which is awesome, but since we were donating our old mattress, we skipped on having them set it up until the old one was picked up. So yeah, we had a mattress just hanging out in our living room for a few days until we could set it up.

But once we did—woah. I was taken aback by how tall the mattress was—let me explain. When you order Saatva's Classic Mattress, you get a few options aside from sizing (we got a Queen). You can choose between two different mattress heights, 11.5 or 14.5 inches, and you can also opt for a foundation either 4.75 or 8.75 inches. Though we chose the shorter foundation, between the height of the bed frame, foundation, and the height of the actual bed, the mattress sits pretty high. For reference, I'm a little bit over 5"5 and the mattress currently sits just below my waist. I love a mattress with height, but when I'm super tired I find myself needing to put in extra effort to get on there. Yep, I have to literally do a little hop to get on top of the bed.

This is something to keep in mind when ordering the mattress. If you bite the bullet, just make sure you get a measuring tape to do some comparisons to see how tall the bed will sit in your room, and whether that works for your lifestyle.

Secondly, new mattresses are infamous for off-gassing. While Saatva says their mattresses don't off-gas, the Classic mattress did have a slight new mattress smell, but not as strong the odors of other new beds I've tried. The smell dissipated in just a few hours. Overall, the mattress looked clean and durable and the feel of the mattress cover felt cozy and comfy.

What is the Saatva mattress made of?

So, the mattress is made of five layers that all combine to cradle your body and keep you cool as you sleep. On the top, you'll find three inches of Euro pillow top, made with Saatva's "Lumbar Zone quilting." This makes the center third of the mattress, where most of your body weight lands, more supportive. The mattress cover is made with organic cotton (that keeps it cool and breathable) and is treated with an antimicrobial treatment to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

The next layer is made of high-density memory foam to support the lumbar zone and lower back and to keep the spine in proper alignment. It also promotes pressure-point relief, which is why you've probably heard people say that it's one of the best mattresses for back pain. Saatva's Classic Mattress is an innerspring mattress, so it's also made with pocketed coils (the queen size features 884 of them!) made from recycled steel. The coils help the bed contour to your curves and respond to your body's movements to reduce motion transfer.

Below that there is another layer of coils to make the mattress more durable, prevent sagging, and allow for better airflow, which Saatva says gives the mattress a cooler feel. Finally, the bed is also made with high-density foam rails to prevent the edges from sagging—so you don't feel like you're about to fall off when you're sitting on its edge.

How does the Saatva mattress feel?

The feel will obviously differ according to what comfort level you opt for—plush soft, luxury firm, or firm. I went for the firm, which Saatva describes as an 8 if you considered firmness on a scale of 1 to 10. If I'd been able to try the mattress in a store, I probably would have chosen luxury firm instead, because the firm mattress does feel pretty hard to the touch. But you don't know what you like until you actually experience it. Having a firm mattress has been a game-changer for my back pain.

Imagine you threw a bunch of plush pillows on an ironing board big enough for your body, and then slept on it. That may make you laugh, but that's what the firm mattress feels like. You don't sink into it like you do on memory foam, which, I assume, is what's been keeping my spine straight and reducing my back pain. But it doesn't feel so hard that you're waking up with pain, as if you've slept on the floor. It has a tiny amount of give, so it still feels soothing to sleep on—Saatva calls it balanced resistance.

How did the Saatva mattress perform?

Motion transfer: Okay, I'm a tosser and turner and snorer, which yes, drives my husband crazy. On the Saatva Classic Mattress, I felt there was minimal motion transfer, but my husband does wake up every time I get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. It may have to do with the size of the mattress. I don't think a queen is ideal for two people to sleep on (but NYC apartment problems). Wherever I go next, a King or Cal King is a non-negotiable (space-allowing, fingers crossed!).

Edge Support: Okay, the edge support on this mattress is top-tier. On my previous mattress, sitting on the edge of the bed was a game of how far you had to scoot yourself back enough to not feel like you were falling off. That isn't the case with the Saatva Classic Mattress. The edges feel reinforced and tough, which even makes hopping onto the bed a little easier.

Temperature: I honestly didn't really notice anything special about the mattress' temperature control. It doesn't make me feel cooler or hotter—what really affects my sleep more is the temperature of my bedroom or the clothes I go to sleep in. That being said, I have tested a cooling mattress made with active cooling technology and I could feel the difference. I don't feel any cooling features in the mattress, but it also doesn't make me sleep hot.

How much does the Saatva mattress cost?

The Saatva Classic mattress isn't the most budget-friendly, but it isn't super expensive either. A queen will cost you about $2,000, but it's usually on sale for $1,700 or less. My tip: Wait until it's on sale to buy it. You will literally save hundreds of dollars you can put toward the foundation or an adjustable base (they have those, too!). Their split king is about $2,500 ($2,440), and their smallest—a twin bed—is $1,095. You'll be happy to know, though, that when you purchase a Saatva mattress it's never coming from inventory. Each mattress is made to order right here in the U.S. That allows them to cut out warehouse costs.

Would I invest in another Saatva mattress?

Totally! The pricing feels just right for an impressive mattress, and they even have options to finance, in case you don't want to pay it all off at once. I feel the mattress is also made with durable construction, and that it helps me sleep better, which is the only thing that matters at the end of the day—I would honestly say it's one of the most comfortable mattresses I've slept on, especially when paired with my cooling sheets. If you're here, it's because you're considering buying the Saatva. I say, just do it. The mattress comes with a 365-night home trial. If you decide you don't want it after, they'll just charge you a $99 processing fee for picking the mattress up.

Btw, if you're not quite ready for a new mattress, Saatva sells a bunch of mattress toppers and other comfy items that will make the one you currently own even better. Shop below!
