Shooting involving Greenville County Sheriff's deputy leaves one dead, SLED investigating

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a shooting that involved the Greenville County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security left one person dead.

Greenville County SWAT team members were called to assist with a federal narcotics investigation at 100 Carver St. in Greenville at 3 p.m., according to a press release from Lt. Ryan Flood with the sheriff's office Tuesday evening. A suspect targeted in homeland security's investigation "armed himself and an officer-involved shooting took place," the release said.

One deputy from GCSO fired their firearm and the suspect was struck. The suspect subsequently was given first aid until emergency service personnel arrived on scene, the release said. The individual was transported to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, however, the Greenville County Coroner's Office sent an email Tuesday evening they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

SLED spokesperson, Renee Wunderlich, confirmed to The Greenville News Tuesday afternoon that the agency was investigating the incident.

The GCSO deputy was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. A critical incident community briefing on the shooting will be released on Dec. 22 on the sheriff office's YouTube page.
