Sixers, Pelicans Agree To First Trade Of NBA Draft

NBA Draft day is finally here — and the draft-day trades are already starting to roll in.

With the first draft-day trade of 2021, the New Orleans Pelicans have sent the No. 53 overall pick to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for $2 million in cash considerations, per NBA insider Shams Charania.

When you look at how many picks the Pelicans hold in this year’s draft, this move makes perfect sense.

Even with this trade, New Orleans still has the to No. 10, No. 35, No. 40 and No. 43 overall selections. And since adding five new players to the roster was unrealistic, getting rid of their lowest pick in exchange for some cash was a solid move.

Philadelphia on the other hand could certainly benefit from some extra picks. Before this exchange, the Sixers held just two picks in the draft — neither of them in ideal position. The No. 53 overall has now been added to their stash of No. 28 and No. 50.

While $2 million may seem like quite a bit for a pick that might not even make the roster, there could be some other motives behind this move. The Sixers are reportedly considering a trade involving there current No. 28 overall — and their new late second-round pick could be used to sweeten that potential deal.

And with four draft pick still remaining for the Pelicans, it’s likely they aren’t done for the day either.
