Six Varsity 845 graduates grab gold at the SUNY Athletic Conference track and field meet
Section 9 high school graduates produced nine top-three efforts at the SUNY Athletic Conference track and field championships.
Marlboro graduate Amarian Hughes was a double winner in the men’s event. The SUNY Cortland senior won the long jump by a half-inch, clearing 22 feet, 11.75 inches on his final attempt. His win in the triple jump proved more dominant, clearing 47 feet, 8.5 inches and winning by more than 2 ½ feet. He also placed 14th in the javelin (130-1).
Port Jervis grad Roland Zanger, a junior at Cortland, tied for first in the high jump at 5 feet, 10.75 inches. He also placed eighth in the long jump at 21-1.5. Zanger also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.77 seconds.
Valley Central grad Jonathan Zavala, a senior at SUNY Brockport, won the 1,500 meters – his dominant final lap of 57.56 seconds allowed him to move from fourth place to first in 3:53.19. Zavala was also eighth in the 5,000 meters at 15:21.04.
Monroe-Woodbury grad Rachel Hirschkind, a grad student at SUNY Geneseo, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase by 23 seconds, in 10:46.46. She was also fifth in the 5,000 in 18:47.94.
Cornwall grad Isabella Fabrizio, a senior at SUNY Oneonta, won the shot put by almost five inches, clearing 44 feet, 10.25 inches on her final attempt. She was also fourth in the hammer, going 160-5 on her final attempt.
Cornwall grad Charles Cypress, a sophomore at SUNY Plattsburgh, finished second in the 200-meters at 21.75 seconds and third in the 100 at 10.70 seconds.
In the men’s meet, Highland grad Timothy Petty was No. 7 in the decathlon for Potsdam; Newburgh grad Lenny Diaz was No. 11 in the 800 for Cortland; Pine Bush grad Chris Ganley was No. 12 in the 100 for Oneonta; New Paltz grad Joseph Ayala was No. 14 in the 3,000 steeplechase for Oneonta; Rondout Valley grad Joseph Ciardi placed No. 15 in the long jump for Oneonta; and, Pine Bush grad Elijah Cruz was No. 17 in the hammer for Oneonta.
In the women;s meet, Pine Bush grad AnJalyna Talmade was No. 4 in the heptathlon and No. 10 in shot put for Cortland; Monroe-Woodbury grad Yasmine Peralta was seventh in the 400 hurdles and was part of a third-place 1,600 relay for Cortland; Coleman grad Makenna Black was No. 16 in the hammer for Oneonta; and, Highland grad Maggie Petty was No. 18 in the 100 for Oneonta.
