Sioux Falls police arrest juvenile driver involved in April crash that left 2 dead

An arrest has been made in the April crash that left two juveniles dead and six others injured.

The Sioux Falls Police Department announced Friday a month-long investigation culminated in the arrest of an unnamed juvenile driver of a Dodge Durango SUV that had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it lost control and collided with a tree and a house near the intersection of E. 18th Street and S. 2nd Avenue.

A crash report states witnesses said the vehicle was going 100 mph.

The driver faces multiple counts of first and second degree manslaughter, vehicular homicide, vehicular battery and other traffic violations, a Friday press release from the department states.

Two 15-year-old occupants, Milana Reeves and Eric Hopkins, were killed in the crash. A 13-year old, a 14-year old, two 15-year-olds and two 17-year-olds were also injured, with their conditions ranging from serious to critical but stable, Lt. Andrew Siebenborn told the Argus Leader in April.

Police later said they identified an eighth juvenile passenger, who had minor injuries and left the scene of the crash before authorities arrived.

"No area residents were otherwise hurt, and no other vehicles are believed to be involved," Sgt. Travis Olsen wrote in an April 27 email. "This crash was easily preventable and a combination of multiple poor choices and driving behaviors probably occurred, which led to this tragedy."

More information may be released at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, during the department's daily police briefing with media.
