Sioux Falls mayor shows interest in law that could make it easier to punish street racing

Mayor Paul TenHaken expressed interest in a recently-passed Alabama law that would make it easier for police to seize vehicles being used in street racing.

TenHaken retweeted a post Thursday morning from Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin that contained an article on the bill, adding "May need to consider in SD as well given the issue this is becoming."

The bill, which would still need to be signed into law by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, would enable police to use photos and videos to identify a vehicle used in street racing, impound it and hold it for a minimum of 48 hours.

Officials with the Sioux Falls Police Department have said they regularly hear complaints about street racing in the city, and have taken action at times.

Earlier this year, eight people were arrested in connection with what police called a "large, organized street racing event" on North Sycamore Avenue that had drawn more than 50 vehicles.
