Singing Sidney 7-year-old wows classmates, Illini with anthem

Already a seasoned pro when it comes to singing the national anthem, Sidney 7-year-old Reagan Schluter still had a hop in her step ahead of Wednesday's performance.
Making this one special was the site (her first time singing at State Farm Center), audience (a Field Trip Day crowd of 11,563 included her first-grade classmates at Unity East Elementary) and team in orange (there's no bigger Illini women's basketball fan around).

"A great day for her," said her dad, Leroy.
In October, a photograph of Reagan auditioning to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at an Illini athletic event ran in The News-Gazette. She's back on Page 1 after delivering on cue ahead of the Illini's rout of St. Peters, coach Shauna Green high-fiving her effort afterward.
Having for years tagged along with Dad — a longtime basketball official and track announcer — Reagan "uncannily memorized the words" to the anthem at an early age, Leroy said. She wasn't even 3 when she sang it publicly for the first time, at Gordyville.
On Wednesday, she wore the jersey of her favorite Illini, Adalia McKenzie.
On Friday, she'll join Dad on a surprise weekend trip to Washington, D.C., to cheer for McKenzie and the Illini against Notre Dame in the Citi Shamrock Classic. Leroy wasn't going to tell her until Friday but was OK with Reagan learning about it in today's News-Gazette.
"The team knows she's coming," he said. "She's into (the Illini) big time, so she'll love it."
