The Sims is making its way to the big screen with Barbie star Margot Robbie's production company attached.

Now in its fourth iteration, The Sims launched in 2000 as a real-life simulator as players create Sims, place them in houses, and control their lives - and deaths, if they so desire.

The iconic game became a hit worldwide, leading to the launches of sequels The Sims 2, 3, and 4 across PC, Mac, and consoles, with a fifth edition in the works.

A live-action drama film based on The Sims was first rumoured in 2007, with updates falling quiet until it was cancelled in 2019. The project has since been reignited with Robbie's production company LuckyChap Productions signed on.

Loki creator Kate Herron is set to direct and co-write the screenplay with Briony Redman, while Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr will produce the feature with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, game publishers EA Games will be involved in the film in a creative and producing capacity.

Further details about casting, plot, and release date are yet to be announced, so it's unclear which stars will fall victim to players removing pool ladders or be blessed by the 'motherlode' cheat.

It follows similar film adaptation challenges to Barbie, which Robbie starred in as the titular character, as a source of entertainment that has no real story and is entirely controlled by the players.

She isn't the only person involved in the project with experience in this kind of adaptation, with Lee working on the Lego movie series.

It comes as Robbie lands her next leading movie role alongside Colin Farrell in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Once more, plot details are being kept secret, with Deadline reporting the film follows two strangers on an unbelievable adventure.

She is also set to reunite with Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling in an origins story to Ocean's Eleven, which she confirmed to the publication is still in the "development stage".
