Sierra Goins awarded Arlene Walsh Memorial Scholarship Fund

MONROEProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital recently announced Sierra Goins, a senior at St. Mary Catholic Central High School, has been named the second recipient of the Arlene Walsh Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The committee members, Jean Foster, daughter of Arlene Walsh; Kenneth McNamee, M.D.; and Vincent Rimanelli, D.O., chose Goins as she exemplified the characteristics Walsh displayed as a community leader and volunteer. In the fall, Goins will attend Notre Dame University to pursue a degree in medicine.

“Sierra represents the heart of a healer, displaying compassion toward the ill and more vulnerable members of society, both locally and internationally,” Rimanelli of ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital Emergency Medicine said in a written statement. “We as a committee are very impressed and proud of Sierra’s accomplishments. The one achievement Sierra is most proud of is her community service leader award of 325 hours over her high school career.”

The scholarship fund was created in memory of Arlene Walsh in November 2022 to help support a Monroe County graduating high school student seeking post-secondary education in the medical field.

Walsh was a devoted hospital supporter who served decades on various hospital committees and boards. She was known for her emphasis on quality, excellence and education.

The scholarship fund was established and funded by members of the medical staff of ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital with additional generous support from the hospital itself and community members.
