Sicario 3 gets promising update from producersLionsgate

Sicario 3 is officially happening.

Producers Basil Iwanyk (John Wick) and Erica Lee have given a positive update on the third film, telling The Messenger that they are looking forward to seeing Benicio del Toro reprise his role once again.

"When we can continue writing it. It was pencils down, but the idea is awesome," Iwanyk said, noting the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

"Oh yeah... I can't wait for Sicario 3," he continued, revealing he's particularly excited to see del Toro back as assassin Alejandro Gillick. "I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn't get old."

Written by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and directed by Dune's Dennis Villeneuve, the first Sicario film came out in 2015.

Starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and del Toro, Sicario follows the story of FBI Agent Kate Macer (Blunt) who is tasked with bringing down the leader of a powerful Mexican drug cartel. Brolin played officer Matt Graver, while del Toro's Alejandro is a former Mexican prosecutor turned CIA-trained assassin after his family was murdered by the cartel.

The film received universal acclaim with Sicario: Day of the Soldado following in 2018, seeing del Toro and Brolin reprise their roles again.

However Sicario 2 director Stefano Sollima is unlikely to be returning for the third film, having previously ruled himself out of the job.

"I'd love to watch another chapter of Sicario, but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style," Sollima previously told Variety. "You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise."
