Siblings killed in house fire had just celebrated 1st birthday, Georgia family says

Two infant siblings were killed in an overnight fire a day after celebrating their 1st birthday, a Georgia family says.

Fire crews responded to a home in Molena around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, and “quickly extinguished” the flames, WXIA reported, citing the Pike County Sheriff’s Office.

The remains of the children were found inside, WSB-TV reported. Authorities haven’t released their names.

“Deputies responded to a house fire ... and we are saddened at the loss of two children,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

The family was in the process of planning a birthday party for the “sweet babies,” according to a GoFundMe started by Logan Bennett, who identified herself as their sister. She said her siblings just turned 1 year old on Saturday, Nov. 12.

“They were very happy,” Bennett told WGCL. “Unfortunately they never got a cake for their birthday, it’s just really sad.”

State fire officials determined the cause of the fire was accidental, the news station reported. Additional information wasn’t immediately available.

McClatchy News reached out to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office for an update Monday, Nov. 14, and was awaiting a response.

Molena is about 60 miles southwest of Atlanta.
