ABC11

A man was arrested Tuesday after firing a gun on Shaw University’s campus and a brief chase.

No injuries were reported.

Raleigh police responded to a report of multiple shots fired at 130 Martin Luther King. Jr. Blvd. shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Upon arrival, officers determined that an adult male had fired gunshots on the campus,” according to a police news release.

Kamal Rasool Abdal-Rafi, 74, got into an argument with another man in front of the International Studies Building, which houses the King Khalid Mosque and classrooms, police said.

Police said Abdal-Rafi fired a gun at the man, but he wasn’t injured.

Abdal-Rafi led police on a brief chase and was caught by a Shaw University police officer and a Wake County Alcohol Beverage Control Commission agent, who was on-duty during the incident.

Abdal-Rafi was arrested and charged with the following felonies: one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill; four counts of discharging a firearm on educational property; and five counts of possession of a firearm on educational property. He also was charged with these misdemeanors: one count of going armed to the terror of the public and one count of cruelty to animals.

Abdal-Rafi and the other man are not students or staff members of the university.
