A suspect in a drug investigation was critically injured after shooting at Wilmington Police Department officers.

Officers responded to 11th and Wright streets around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning to serve a warrant. The "high risk search" was conducted as part of a drug investigation, Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams said.

As officers approached the residence, one suspect fired shots at Wilmington police officers, Williams said. One officer was struck but did not suffer an injury.

Officers returned fire, with one suspect sustaining critical injuries. The suspect was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The identity of the suspect has not been released by Wilmington police.
