This is a developing story and will update.

Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting that killed a teenager in a parking lot next to Kipp Indy Legacy High School.

There is no ongoing threat to students, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter, by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers responded to the Leadership and Legacy Center at 2200 Ralston Avenue on a report of a person shot about 1 p.m. and found a teenage male suffering from gunshot injuries. The teen was transported to a hospital and later died, according to IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.

No one else was injured, said Foley.

The shooting took place in the parking lot next to the Edna Martin Christian Center and KIPP Indy Legacy High School. Investigators blocked a large portion of the parking lot with crime scene tape and a jacket laid on the ground as they marked evidence.

A person who is not a student of the school was detained, IMPD said on X.

Officials from Kipp Indy Legacy High School have been in contact with families regarding dismissal information, according to a post on X from IMPD. Families of students at Edna Martin Christian Center should have received information from the center.

Parents can find info on the Titan App, Foley said.

"We understand the concerns of the family involved, people in the neighborhood," Foley said. "We've got a teenager who was shot today. It's a tragic incident for us, for the community. We are working to identify what occurred and bring justice to both the victim and friends of the individual involved."

As detectives continued to investigate Friday afternoon, a woman jogged past the scene to the front of the high school then walked back to her car after picking up a student. School buses also started to arrive in the parking lot.

Police were asking drivers and pedestrians to avoid Ralston Avenue north of East 23rd Street while they investigate. They expect the street to be closed for several hours. The road was reopened about 3:40 p.m.

The shooting continues a deadly few days for teenagers in Indianapolis.

Janiya Carr, 15, found dead with gunshot injuries behind thicket of trees at an apartment complex on the northeast side of Indianapolis on Wednesday. Tevis Walker, 34, was arrested in the teen's death Thursday night, according to police.

Early Sunday, Kalin Washington, 16, was killed in a Halloween party shooting on the northeast side of Indianapolis that injured nine other people.
