We are shivering in Florida and it’s about to get even colder. Is this a record?

Miami hit 48 Saturday morning. Fort Lauderdale was 46.

Record cold?

“Nowhere near the record,” said senior meteorologist Larry Kelly of the National Weather Service in Miami.

Jan. 14 weather records

The record in Miami for today, Jan. 14, in Miami is 37, set in 1964, which was just over a month before The Beatles first visit to Miami on Feb. 16, 1964. The Liverpool lads had a warmer greeting when they landed at Miami International Airport.

The record for this day in Fort Lauderdale was 34 in 1956.

We are still below average for this day of the year when the low is 61, Kelly said.

“But it’s still pretty windy out there; that’s what kind of made it feel a little cooler than the temperatures were,” he said. South Florida experienced some wind chills in the upper-30s across portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties Saturday morning.

Miami-Dade and Broward officials have activated cold weather plans in both counties to get those on the streets into shelters overnight Saturday and Sunday.

Fire weather

Those winds are why the weather service had issued a fire weather watch for Miami-Dade and Broward given the low humidity that was in the low- to mid-30s and winds gusting to 25 mph. Though the fire weather watch has been lifted there is still a red flag warning through 8 p.m. Saturday.

A red flag warning means warm temperatures, very low humidity and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger, according to the weather service. Outdoor burning is not recommended and tossing lit cigarettes out the window is never a good idea.

Temperatures should reach about 60, 61 degrees Saturday afternoon and maybe a little warmer along the coast in Miami-Dade and Broward, Kelly said.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds will decrease as Saturday progresses and the thermostat is going to continue to fall as northwesterly winds bring cold air down the peninsula. Lows tonight could see some upper-30s in the western suburbs, with low 40s across the metro downtown areas across the East Coast, Kelly said.

The weather service issued a frost advisory for the interior, non-populated Broward County area. As of Saturday morning, a frost advisory is not issued for Miami-Dade, Kelly said. But meteorologists will be watching to see if Miami joins the patchy frost party.

“Another cold night in store for South Florida for sure,” Kelly said. The wind chills will be in the mid- to upper-30s Sunday morning. If the actual temperature dips to 40 in Miami that will make it the coldest day in the Magic City since Jan. 22, 2020, according to Brian McNoldy, senior research associate at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School.

Your next question? Will South Florida set any records Sunday?

Still not close, Kelly said as he scrolled the weather service’s computer. The record for Jan. 15 in Fort Lauderdale was 31 degrees and in Miami 34, both set in 1948.

Small craft advisories remain in effect across all Florida Keys coastal waters, through Saturday, according to the weather service in Key West. Temperatures Saturday night are expected to drop into the lower-50s “and possibly the upper-40s across the Upper Keys.”

Rip currents

The weather service warns of a high risk for rip currents along East Coast beaches from this cold front as easterly onshore winds whip Atlantic waters. If you’re swimming, do so near a lifeguard. (Hey, we have Canadian tourists at this time of year; some may find South Florida warm by comparison.) Otherwise, maybe take a walk on the beach.

“Marine conditions will improve gradually through the weekend and should subside completely by Monday,” the weather service said.

Will it snow in Florida this holiday weekend? Temperatures forecast below freezing

Around Florida

Gainesville forecasters issued a freeze warning for midnight Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, due to the expectation of sub-freezing temperatures around 27 expected for portions of northeast and northern Florida, except near the St Johns River Basin, where meteorologists expect a tinge warmer — about 29 to 32 degrees.

Wind chills in Jacksonville were in the 20s Saturday morning, Fox Weather reported, “with actual temperatures in the 30s or even the upper-20s Sunday morning.”

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville issued a freeze watch Saturday night through Sunday morning for coastal regions in Duval, St. Johns and Flagler counties.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Appropriate action should be taken to ensure tender vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate protection from the cold temperatures. Young children, the elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold. Take measures to protect them,” the service posted.

Sunny day in Orlando, but temperatures are nearly 20 degrees below average, Spectrum News 13 meteorologist Bryan Karrick said in the Orlando Sentinel.

Saturday night brings potential for frost and a freeze in Central Florida. The weather service in Melbourne’s wind chill advisory ended at 10 a.m. but in the land of Disney these chills — what your exposed skin feels — were in the upper-20s to lower-30s across most of east central Florida. Expect a low temperature of 34 degrees Sunday morning, the service said.

Tampa Bay area temperatures started out in the mid-40s Saturday morning, but the wind chill was 39 at 7 a.m., according to WFLA News Channel 8.

No weather warnings for the Bradenton, Tampa Bay area as of Saturday morning where temperatures were about 54 degrees around 11 a.m. Look for a high of 56 Saturday and a low of 41 Sunday morning, but with a wind chill of 38.

Forecast for Sanibel-Captiva Saturday is a high of 59 Saturday and low of 47 Sunday morning, according to the weather service.
