CBS has confirmed a straight-to-series order for Watson, a contemporary medical drama based on the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

Last year, it was announced that the show was in the development stages, but now there is confirmation that the series has received the green light (via Deadline).

Watson will be set one year after the death of Sherlock at the hands of Moriarty – an event which occurred in Doyle’s short story The Final Problem, before the detective was brought back to life in future writing.

Sidekick Dr. Watson will take centre stage in the new series and will be played by Morris Chestnut, known for his role as Barrett Cain in Fox medical drama The Resident.

As well as playing the title role, Chestnut will also executive produce the new medical drama.

The synopsis for the show reads: "Dr. John Watson resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though – Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century."

Craig Sweeny will serve as showrunner on Watson, and he also wrote the show’s pilot. Sweeny is no stranger to adapting Doyle’s stories, as he was an executive producer on CBS’s Elementary, a modern take set in New York and starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as Holmes and Watson.

However, new series Watson is thought to bear no connection to the popular procedural.

CBS entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement: "We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the centre of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor.

"Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries."

Watson is expected to arrive on screens during the 2024-25 US TV season, airing alongside new CBS shows Matlock and Poppa’s House – which were both pushed back due to the strikes last year.
