A third Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr looks like it could be finally happening.

The actor first appeared as the famous detective back in 2009, reprising the role in 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Things had since gone quiet on a third outing, with the film being seemingly pushed back indefinitely.

However, producer Susan Downey has now given a more optimistic update on the project, confirming that a third film is a "priority" for the actor in an UnWrapped podcast.

"Here's what I can tell you," she began. "Prior to this, we had lunch together with Robert... It was a very specific topic of conversation, so yes. It is in the hopper."

Downey continued: "We're gonna do it when it's right with the right people, but it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert."

While Downey didn't give any specific details on when to expect the film, it's definitely a more positive update, following years of delays on the project.

The third movie had originally been slated for release on December 25, 2020, before being moved to December 22, 2021 and then subsequently taken off of the release calendar entirely.

Dexter Fletcher, who is set to direct the film, revealed last year that the Covid-19 pandemic had been responsible for the setbacks.

"I do think it will get made. I think it has to be made," he told Collider.

"It's one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind. But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I'm sure there are other people acutely aware of that as well."

Sherlock Holmes 3 does not currently have a release date.
