Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has signed a new "long-term" contract.

The 35-year-old German took over at Hillsborough in October with the club bottom of the Championship after their worst start to a league season under Xisco Munoz.

Rohl oversaw a tremendous turnaround in form as they finished three points clear of the relegation zone thanks to four wins in their final six games.

“I am delighted to extend my contract with Sheffield Wednesday. This is a fantastic club that has taken me to heart and I feel exactly the same way," he told the club website.

“I would like to thank the chairman for giving me this opportunity and now we are excited to look forward and can plan ahead together for the new season."

Rohl, who left his job as Germany assistant manager last September, became the youngest manager in the EFL when he took over in South Yorkshire.

He had also been on the staff at RB Leipzig, Southampton and Bayern Munich prior to starting his managerial career.

Wednesday were seven points adrift of safety when Rohl arrived and, after successive defeats in his first two games, that gap increased to 11 points, with the Owls having taken just three points from their opening 13 matches.

Victory over Rotherham on 25 October ended their winless start but they did not win again until 2 December to leave their survival hopes looking distant.

They won four successive matches in February and March to boost their chances of avoiding relegation but then won just one of their next seven games.

However, a 3-1 win at Blackburn was followed by a 3-0 victory over West Brom in their final home game of the campaign that lifted Wednesday out of the relegation zone for the first time since August.

That meant a point would have been enough for them to survive on the final day - and they recorded a 2-0 win at Sunderland to complete a great escape.
