Shazam! Fury of the Gods finally arrives in cinemas next week after a long wait and many release date changes, and we've now got the first reactions to the DC sequel.

The new movie sees Billy Batson and his foster siblings, now all able to transform into superheroes, take on the Daughters of Atlas, who have come to take their powers back from them.

Ahead of its release on March 17, the sequel has been screening to critics, who've taken to social media to share their thoughts.

Digital Spy's deputy movies editor Gabriella Geisinger tweeted:

"Within #ShazamFuryOfTheGods is a fun buddy comedy starring Djimon Hounsou & Jack Dylan Grazer. Unfortunately, you have to watch Shazam 2 to see it. Few bright spots bogged down by final act muddy CGI battle."

Others who saw the film had a more positive reaction — with praise ranging from calling the film "exhilarating" to singling out Rachel Zegler as a scene-stealer.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings back Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler and Djimon Hounsou from the first movie, alongside some heavyweight newcomers.

Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler play Hespera, Kalypso and Anthea, respectively — aka the Daughters of Atlas.

Last month, Mirren joked about how the sequel's plot was "too complicated" to talk about.

"We are angry goddesses wearing unbelievably heavy costumes," she said. "It was very hot and uncomfortable, and in fact Lucy [Liu] said at the end of the first day's shooting, 'They are trying to kill us', in all seriousness."

The film actually marks the first release of the new era of the DC Universe, following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-heads of DC Studios.

Back in January, they unveiled their first batch of movies and TV shows that will form part of the first phase of the new era.

It's unclear whether Shazam will be back in another movie, but if the sequel is a hit, it's possible.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released in cinemas on March 17.
