It’s Shark Week: Blood is needed. Get off your posterior, be a Red Cross of Idaho donor

Duun-dunn, duun-dunn!

Who’s a fan of that crazy-big fish with the terrifying toothy grin? Y’all are probably glued to the TV (or electronic device) for Shark Week then, which kicked off Sunday.

Even though Shark Week is filled with educational, interesting content, the topic is still ominous. I mean, nothing gets your heart pumping like having “JAWS” up in your face — even through a screen. The intense eyes, quick movements, immense strength — and, of course, those teeth and the damage they can inflict.

Hardcore shark buffs are probably OK with blood in the water, which makes American Red Cross of Idaho’s partnering with Discovery quite fitting. And the organization remains in need of donors.

In honor of Shark Week, those who give blood in July will be entered to win a merchandise package containing a “beach cruiser bike, smokeless portable fire pit, paddle board, kayak, and a $500 gift card to put toward accessories,” according to a news release.

The American Red Cross faced severe blood shortages throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. And the organization is still struggling, collecting “approximately 12 percent fewer blood donations than needed” in June, according to a news release. To ensure that hospitals have the supply necessary for summer’s emergencies, donors are vital.

Schedule an appointment to give blood in Boise and other locations by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting rcblood.org/sharkweek or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
