Shania Twain's New '80s Glam-Themed Music Video Is Truly Iconic

Shania Twain is, without a doubt, a music video visionary. From prowling the pyramids in a leopard print catsuit for "That Don't Impress Me Much" to slaying aliens for "I'm Gonna Getcha Good," she's all about creatively outdoing herself, and fans think she may've done so with her latest "Waking Up Dreaming" video, which is a masterful ode to '80s glam and rock 'n roll.

In true Twain style, the video is incredibly fashion-forward and features her in a bright pink wig, oversized false eyelashes, and a Prince-inspired outfit of sparkly purple pants and a white ruffled button-down shirt. Later on, she rocks a blonde mullet and pink zebra-striped dress, and in another look, she wears a green sequined jumpsuit with eyelashes to match and a bright red wig.

"I'm definitely a daydreamer," she recently said on BBC's The One Show in promotion of the track. "Daydreaming allows you to dream about things that may never become a reality. It’s all about escapism, I'm definitely one of those daydreamers. So, a lot more fun to dream while you're awake and make up what it is you might wanna be. In this particular song, I wanna just be a rockstar. I wanna be Prince, I wanna be Cyndi Lauper, I wanna be all these fun crazy things that I've never actually done."

And, as she said in her Netflix documentary Not Just a Girl, there was always a part of Twain who wanted to be a rockstar. That's how she got involved with her ex-husband, Mutt Lange, who worked with classic rock bands and helped give a genre-bending edge to her early music. Now, three decades into her career, she continues to blur lines and break rules, and fans love it.

"The song is incredible and the amazing '80s glam looks from this video took it to a whole new level," one YouTube commenter wrote. "The '80s vibes are amazing and the song is so uplifting," another added. "Love the '80s vibe. My favorite Shania song since the '90s!" someone else wrote.

Ahead of the song's September 23 release, Twain posted on Instagram, teasing the track. "Every time I get to announce something like this I get such a rush of adrenaline and nerves - it never gets old," she wrote. "I've spent the last couple years working away on new music... on my documentary... on the Vegas residency and it's been such a creatively fulfilling time for me, I can't wait for this next chapter and Waking Up Dreaming is just the start."

This single is the first off of Twain's sixth full-length album—her first since 2017—for which she hasn't yet shared a release date. But we can't wait to listen!
