Shania Twain And Her Husband Have A *Totally* Epic Love Story

You know her, you love her, and you probably have alllll of her songs memorized. But now, the queen of country-pop music, Shania Twain, is about to begin a new era.
The singer’s new album Queen of Me drops on February 3 (“Giddy Up” is already a top song of 2023, for sure), and Shania will embark on her first tour since 2015 in April of 2023.
Shania constantly delivers some of the best country hits–from “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” (who could ever forget her iconic Coachella performance with Harry Styles?!) to “Life’s About To Get Good.”
Her music is as iconic as she is, and everyone knows behind every good song is an even better story. Seriously, Shania’s love life is truly the stuff of a legend. She's been married twice—and the story of how she met her current husband, Frederick Thiébaud, is something that would make a really good country song.
She married her first husband, Mutt Lange, in 1993.
Shania's first husband, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, is 74 years old. He is a music composer and producer from Zambia who has worked with various artists such as Mariah Carey and Def Leppard, according to IMDb.
He was also Shania's co-writer and producer for many of her hit songs, such as “Any Man of Mine,” “You're Still the One,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” “That Don't Impress Me Much,” and more, according to CNN.
The couple met in 1993 when Mutt reached out to Shania after hearing songs from her debut album. After the two started working together, Shania's career quickly skyrocketed, according to The Daily Mail UK.
Their relationship turned romantic six months after they first met, and the couple got married in December of 1993.
Shania and Mutt have a son together.
In 2001, Shania and Mutt gave birth to their only son, Eja, which is pronounced "Asia." He is now 21 years old.
After Shania's vocal cords began to falter due to a dysphonia diagnosis in 2003, she believed her career was over and devoted her time to raising Eja in Switzerland, according to AARP
Mutt cheated on Shania with her best friend and assistant.
Shania and Mutt were married for 14 years before their marriage fell apart. Mutt cheated on her with her assistant and best friend at the time, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The two split in 2008, per PEOPLE.
During this time, Shania was also living a relatively private life while struggling with damaged vocal cords and lyme disease, according to CNN.
Shania had suspicions that Mutt was cheating on her (which Marie-Anne told her were wrong–yikes!) But she officially learned about the affair from Frédéric Thiébaud, who was married to Marie-Anne at the time, per AARP.
Shania talked about her grief and divorce from her first husband in an interview with PEOPLE. "When I lost Mutt…it was similarly intense to losing my parents," she said, referencing the car crash that killed both of her parents in 1987. "It was like a death."
She worried she would never recover or "crawl out of this hole." But she did. And her vocal cords healed, alongside her heart.
Shania married Frédéric Thiébaud in 2011.
Frédéric, who Shania now considers her best friend, is a 53-year-old businessman from Switzerland, according to his LinkedIn.
Shania spoke often about how Frédéric helped her get through the difficult period following her divorce from Mutt. The two eventually became close friends– and then started dating around 2009.
After getting engaged in 2010, Shaina married Frédéric Thiébaud in 2011.

Fred and Marie-Anne have a daughter together.
Johanna Thiebaud is Fred’s daughter, and Shania’s stepdaughter. She is 21 years old, according to her Instagram.
Shania, Fred, Eja, and Johanna have grown close over the years and they've taken many trips together as a united family. Some of their destinations have included Tokyo, Japan, and Shania’s own lakefront cottage in Canada.
Shania has noted in the past how their (extremely) similar situations at the exact same time helped them to understand and support each other better than anyone else.
This love story could provide material for at least 1000 country songs. Hopefully there will be at least a few on Queen of Me, but I’m sure whatever Shania’s put together will be incredible either way.
