Shah Rukh Khan's new action thriller Jawan is smashing the box office with a record-breaking opening.

Directed by Atlee (pseudonym of Arun Kumar), the Bollywood film sees Khan in a double role. The actor plays both Azad Rathore, the prison officer of a woman's correctional facility in Mumbai, and his father Captain Vikram Rathore, with the two characters teaming up to fight corruption.

The cast is rounded out by Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra, among others.

Premiered on September 7, the film has earned an estimate of $64.4 million at the box office (via Deadline). Jawan, which translates to "soldier", has bagged the biggest four-day debut for a Hindi-language movie worldwide, while it is also the highest-ever launch for a Bollywood title in the domestic market. In India, the film has earned an estimated 350 crore ($42M), beating Khan's previous movie Pathaan.

Meanwhile, Jawan also secured the second-best global opening weekend ever for an Indian title on IMAX with a $2.4M grossing. In India, where it showed across 26 IMAX screens, the film has become IMAX's second-best launch weekend ever for an Indian title and fifth-best for any movie.

Earlier in the year, Pathaan grossed $66.24 million worldwide in across it's 5-day opening weekend with $40.75 million of that coming from India.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan stars Khan as the titular spy for India's foreign intelligence agency RAW.

The protagonist has to fight the leader of a group of mercenaries and a former RAW agent with plans to attack his homeland with a deadly virus.

Jawan is in cinemas now.
