SF Giants to wear rainbow-colored logos on uniforms in honor of LGBTQ Pride Month; first MLB team to do so

The San Francisco Giants are honoring LGBTQ Pride Month by featuring a rainbow-colored logo on their jerseys and caps when they play against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

The move makes the SF Giants the first major league team to do so.

Giants officials made the announcement on Tuesday, on the first day of Pride Month.

The team will wear a “SF logo Pride Patch on the right sleeve of their home jersey and a custom cap that incorporates the Pride colors into the SF logo,” according to a statement.

“We are extremely proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we kick off one of the best annual celebrations in San Francisco by paying honor to the countless achievements and contributions of all those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are allies of the LGBTQ+ community,” Giants President and CEO Larry Baer said in a statement shared on Twitter.

The 11 colors represented in the Giants logo include the traditional Pride colors — red (life); orange (healing); yellow (sunlight); green (nature); blue (serenity); purple (spirit) — as well as black and brown, representing LGBTQ people of color; and the colors of the transgender flag: light blue, pink and white.

“Very proud that the San Francisco Giants are taking this step. Very proud to be part of it,” manager Gabe Kapler said Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. “Looking forward to the impact and the support that we can provide for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Next week, two films will screen at the Giants’ home, Oracle Park, during Pride Movie Night as part of the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival.

The Lin-Manuel Miranda-produced musical “In the Heights” will screen on Friday, June 11. The upcoming musical drama about a 16-year-old drag queen, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” will screen on Saturday.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., local time, on both days.
