One thing we know for sure is that Mindy Kaling knows how to write hilarious (and seriously accurate) TV shows centering around Gen Z women. While we bid farewell to Mindy's Netflix series, Never Have I Ever, we welcome back another season of her latest comedy, The Sex Lives of College Girls on HBO Max. The show follows four suitemates at the prestigious Essex College in Vermont. Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney try to discover themselves during their time at Essex, but find themselves in difficult situations along the way.

The show not only includes a diverse cast, but its plot touches on both the positive and negative parts of sex and relationships. While Leighton is a closeted lesbian trying to fight internalized homophobia and figure out who she is, Whitney has a secret affair with her soccer coach. Bela has been sexually harassed and humiliated while trying to work her way up the university's comedy magazine, and Kimberly has been exploring her sexuality with Leighton's brother, Nico. There's a lot to unpack, but season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls will continue to cover a mix of serious topics and gritty punchlines that get these experiences right.

Ahead, find everything you need to know about season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Is The Sex Lives of College Girls season 2 happening?

It sure is! We get to reunite with the quad squad and our other Essex faves for a second season. After the success of season 1, HBO Max made the official announcement in a video posted to Twitter on December 7, 2021.

"Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble have created and written a show that is full of heart, female friendships, and awkward naked parties," Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max said in a statement. "We are delighted that this comic, honest portrayal of the college condition has resonated for everyone, whether they had sex in college or not. We can't wait to see where these uniquely complex yet relatable characters will go next."

What will The Sex Lives of College Girls season 2 be about?

Since season 1 ended with a ton of drama, there's plenty of material to work with for season 2. For starters, Kimberly got caught cheating on her economics exam using an answer sheet from Nico's fraternity, Theta. She then stole the other answer sheets from the frat to use as leverage in her academic hearing. While she didn’t get expelled, her scholarship got revoked which means that she'll have to pick up extra work-study shifts to stay at Essex.

Leighton then came out to Kimberly after she and her girlfriend Alicia broke up. Bela quit the Catullan after being sexually assaulted by one of the male senior editors, which led to her and the other female writers starting their own comedy organization on campus. Whitney also told her mom — who happens to be a politician — about her affair with her coach. We'll most likely see these intense stories continue to unfold in season 2.

On June 20, Mindy Kaling confirmed with Entertainment Tonight that there's a lot more drama and sex-positive stories in season 2. "It's called The Sex Lives of College Girls for a reason and I think all four of the girls are fun and experimenting and doing lots of fun stuff," she said. "There's more heartbreak, there's a lot more sex and there's some really funny new characters and some new hot guys."

Who is in the cast for The Sex Lives of College Girls season 2?

With open-ended storylines left in the season 1 finale, it's hard to tell exactly who's returning for another semester at Essex. We'll definitely see the core four — Pauline Chalamet (yes, she is Timothée's sister), Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott — grace our screens again.

On the other hand, we, unfortunately, won't be seeing Leighton's brother, Nico, anymore. Gavin Leatherwood, who plays Nico, told Us Weekly in March 2022 that he will not be returning for the show's second season. He said that while "he was happy to do the first season," he will be "branching out into a different direction" and pursuing other projects.

"It was such an incredible experience. I think Mindy is brilliant and the cast, everyone’s lovely," Gavin told the outlet. "But with so many amazing opportunities out there, we want to keep spreading our wings and leading ourselves to other projects so that's the move."

But there will be a new Essex student in the mix. In June 2022, Deadline reported that Mitchell Slaggert has joined the cast for season 2 as a series regular. He will play Jackson, a transfer student at Essex College who arrives on the scene after attending a "big party school" for two years. He's also a former Division 1 athlete and is characterized as someone with a lot of confidence, and "a depth that begins to show over time." Mitchell has previously starred in the season finale of Gossip Girl as Rob.

An August 2022 report from Deadline also revealed that actor Charlie Hall will be joining season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls as Andrew, a student at Essex College. There are no other deets on his character just yet, but it'll be interesting to see another face in the Essex mix.

There's no word yet on whether series regulars like Midori Francis will come back for season 2, but you already know we'll be on the lookout.

Is season 2 in production?

Yessss! On Tuesday, April 19, showrunner Mindy Kaling uploaded a carousel of photos on Instagram, documenting that the cast is back together again for a season 2 table read. "Back at Essex College with these baddies," she captioned the post. One big group shot included Alyah, Pauline, Renée, Amrit, plus Christopher Meyer who plays Canaan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino who appears as Lila, Mekki Leeper who plays Eric, Lauren "Lolo" Spencer who plays Jocelyn, and Renika Williams who appears as Willow.

Additional photos featured Mindy and co-creator Justin Noble, and a pink banner that read, "Welcome to season two!"

When does The Sex Lives of College Girls season 2 come out?

There's no word yet on when season 2 will drop on HBO Max, but we do know that they're in production. The first season of the series debuted on November 18, 2021, and released new episodes weekly until December 9, 2021. If we base the release on the same timeline as season 1, we may be able to expect season 2 in Fall 2022.
