'Sex Education' Season 5: News, InformationNetflix

For several years now, the hit TV show Sex Education and its vibrant cast have brought viewers along on the intimate (and hilarious) journey of sexual self-exploration that occurs during one of the weirdest parts of a person's life: teenagerhood. The Netflix breakout has earned an army of fans for its heartwarming story that follows awkward kid Otis Butterfield as he tries to be a "sex therapist"for his classmates (he’s learned a lot from his mom, who is an actual sex therapist).

Over three seasons, viewers watch Otis and his classmates go on their own journeys to find love and satisfaction, and now, Sex Education is dropping its long-awaited fourth season on Netflix. So, naturally, people have questions about the show’s future.

What’s next for the show? And will there be a season 5 of Sex Education? Here’s what you need to know.

When is season 4 hitting Netflix?

Cancel your weeknight plans and pop that popcorn, because season 4 of Sex Education drops on Netflix on Thursday, September 21.

What happens during season 4?

There aren't a ton of details right now—the season hasn’t even dropped yet—but there are some hints and general info out there already. According to Netflix, there are “monumental changes” ahead for Otis and his buddies after their school, Moordale Secondary, closed.

Now, the teens are having to navigate some “culture-shock” at their new school, Cavendish Sixth Form College, which has a super progressive environment. For example, the school focuses on having students practice sustainability and doing daily yoga in the communal garden. The popular group at school is known as the Coven, and everyone loves the group because they’re kind.

Worth noting: Otis’ BFF Eric is invited to join the Coven at Cavendish College. So, there's a good chance this causes a little bit of tension between the two guys.

Here's a trailer for the new season, by the way:

Is there going to be Sex Education season 5?

The series has been ongoing since January of 2019, and then dropped two more seasons in 2020 and 2021. Obviously, season 4 took a little bit longer to push out of production, as it is airing two years after season 3, in 2023.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no, there’s no season 5 coming down the pipeline. Netflix has clearly stated that this is the “fourth and final season” of the show.

Why is the show ending after season 4?

A big reason the show is coming to an end is that the cast is getting older and is ready for new projects. It's been four years since the first season dropped, and the actors and writers have been filming and writing the script for the show for much longer. It makes sense they might want to take a break.

Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve, is 27 and she told Total Film that it’s “tricky” to play a teenager when she's in her late twenties. “It’s different when you're playing a character that is sort of stuck in time,” she said. “You know, we're playing 17-year-olds, and we're all almost 30, it is a bit weird.”

Plus, show creator and writer Laurie Nunn wrote an open letter to fans after sharing that Sex Education would only have four seasons. “This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate,” she said. "Goodbyes are the worst, but let's celebrate all the good times we've had."

But don't get teary-eyed yet. You can still relive the Mooredale Secondary glory days from seasons 1 through 3 on Netflix as you wait for season 4, and hopefully, this news will help you savor the last season when it finally hits the streamer.
