Sex Education show creator Laurie Nunn has revealed that choosing to end the show with season four was not an "easy decision to make".

Nunn shared an open letter to fans in wake of the Sex Education season 4 teaser trailer drop, which confirmed the fourth season will be it's last, arriving on Netflix on September 21.

"Writing this feels bittersweet, as we've decided the fourth season will also be the final instalment of our show," wrote Nunn, who is creator, lead writer and executive producer of the hit Netflix series.

"This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate."

Nunn shared her pride at what the team had managed to create with Sex Education and how this their intentions for the show had resonated with fans across the globe.

"We wanted to make a show that would answer some of the questions we all used to have about love, sex, friendship, and our bodies," she added. "Something that would have helped our inner teenagers feel a little less alone.

"It's been overwhelming seeing how the show has connected with people around the world, and we hope it's made some of you feel a little less alone too."

Nunn went on to share details of the show's humble beginnings, which began in 2007, when the writing team "spent a month in a cramped office above a sex shop".

It would be a further 12 years before audiences would be introduced to the characters of Otis Milburn and Eric Effiong, when Sex Education season one arrived on Netflix in January 2019.

"We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our brilliant writers, cast and crew who put so much heart into making every episode," Nunn continues. "They have worked tirelessly to bring you the final series, and we can’t wait to share it with you."

She signs off: "Goodbyes are the worst, but let's celebrate all the good times we've had".
